D, 3D and 4D are trademarked terminology used in the industry to distinguish the different types of pictures and videos that can be provided. D ultrasounds are the traditional black & white ultrasounds you have probably seen before. The pictures show the skeletal structure (outline) of the baby. You also get to see the baby moving in 2D! This is the type of ultrasound that was probably used for your diagnostic ultrasound.

The 2D (2 dimensional) image is the flat black and white picture that looks like an outline or skeletal image of your baby you get at your diagnostic ultrasound. The basic strategy is to set up a 2D projection for drawing controls. You can do this either on top of your 3D rendering or in overlay planes. A 2D film is shot using one roll of film and one lens (as is common in traditional cinema). A 3D film is shot using two rolls of film and two lenses (corresponding to the left and right eye). If a film was not shot in 3D it cannot be screened as a 3D film.
