Internally, the files are the same. Both result in your archive being created in multiple pieces. The primary difference is in where the pieces are located when the archive is created. A spanned archive will always be written to removable media. A split archive will always be written to local storage on your hard drive, rather than removable media.

A split archive is a .ZIP file that is broken into smaller segments. You may want to create a split file if you plan to place the file onto removable media later or if you want to place the files on a web page, allowing users to download the archive in pieces (if the archive is large). The grades will be rolled and not changeable - so they will be blocked from submitting grades.
