I have often heard patients use this term and it probably comes from the fact that in the condition of osteoarthritis the slipperiness or viscosity of the joint fluid (synovial fluid) is greatly reduced. The fluid becomes thin and watery and is not elastic when force is applied during weight bearing. Diseased synovial fluid does not act as a lubricant and shock absorber as it normally would and this can contribute to pain stiffness and decreased mobility of the particular joint.

Artificial tears have been the mainstay of dry eye treatment. Until recently, these used to be recommended like cigarette brands--doctors would hand out whatever they had in the sample closet, and patients would pick their brand. Patients would find that no matter how long or how frequently they used these drops their eyes would still be dry. Answer: A dry socket is when a clot does not develop or comes out for some reason. Smokers are more prone to dry sockets due to less blood flow to the affected area. The clot develops as a barrier for the socket when a tooth is extracted. We ask that you not rinse, brush your teeth, use straws, smoke or spit for 24 hours after having teeth extracted. Dry socket is an infection in your tooth socket after a tooth is extracted. The condition usually develops when a blood clot fails to form in the socket, or if the blood clot comes loose. Special care must be taken with the socket until healing is complete.
