Some people think the 28-foot Triton is too small with too little freeboard to cruise offshore and be comfortable to live aboard. The main reason the average size cruising yacht these days is around 40-foot long is because people find they need that space to contain all the equipment and gadgets the yachting press and their neighbors in the marina have told them they can't do without.

I often am asked this question and it's impossible to give one set of guidelines helpful for everyone. People want to know: What type or size boat do I need? How do I learn to sail? What does cruising cost? What equipment should I have? and so on. If you've read much on this site you'll already know that I stand outside the mainstream on most of these issues and you'll have to view my advice as just my opinion based on my own cruising style which has slowly evolved and will continue to evolve.

Trekkers and staff for the expeditions come from all over the United States. The diversity of our groups means that all Trekkers meet new kinds of people each summer. The one quality that unites most Trekkers is curiosity. For many of our younger Trekkers, this is the first time they have ventured into the wilderness. Ship to Shore calls are possible on all cruise lines, but they cost a pretty penny. My suggestion is to try to wait to call on your cell phone when in port or use a pay phone. Most cell phones work while your in port.

Another short answer would usually be: right here, right now. No place I have seen is perfect in every way. Either it's marred because it's too crowded, too expensive, the weather's too cold or the typhoon season is long and sultry, the anchorages are rolly, or a thousand other imperfections. What might be enjoyable for a week or a month may also be insufferable to you after a year.

For many people this is a challenging problem to overcome. I've been lucky in that up until now when I have been outside the US, which has been most of my life, my mother has been willing to do my mail forwarding, banking transactions and store a couple boxes of personal effects I didn't think I could part with. I wonder now how I would have managed without that support.

The best cruising boat is the one that suits your needs. There are so many cruising different lifestyles, so many destinations, that the boat perfect for one might fall down flat on the other. For example, consider an expensive Hinckley Bermuda 40, designed to survive all but the severest of storms, a magnificent creation created to survive the intense stress of a lifetime of cruising. Take that supposedly ideal boat, and put it next to a relatively cheap Hunter.

You should probably join a sailing club, an organization that starts by teaching you how to sail, and then allows you to charter their boats by the day. That way, you can get your feet wet in the activity without committing yourself to the purchase of an expensive boat and equipment. Another way is to find a friend with a boat and go out with her or him to see what you think of being out on the water.

We cruise at between 1800 rpm which gives us 8.7kts through still water, and 1900 rpm which gives us 9.2kts. These speeds vary a tenth or so depending on whether we have full fuel and water. As we get lighter, they pick up a bit. We have become very comfortable cruising at the 9kt pace. Sometimes we will crank it up to 2000 and see 9.6 when there is a particularly long day in store for us.

Our expeditions travel to wilderness areas and explore them — on foot. Each group will visit several different regions of the Southwest: red rock canyons, high desert mesas, and alpine ranges. We explore mostly on foot, backpacking and day-hiking into the backcountry, but we also take canoe trips through river canyons. The wilderness areas of the Southwest are vast. They conceal remarkable cultural secrets as well, including important ruins and contemporary Native American communities.

It is scheduled to be three hours long. There are two sessions (approximately an hour and fifteen minutes each) with a break in the middle for refreshments. But we can customize the seminar for a longer or shorter time frame if you wish. The three-hour format is best for an evening seminar (say from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.) or a Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, or Sunday afternoon. Any three-hour time slot will work.
