The setup fee associated with BeCom Wireless only includes the installation of one point. After the initial installation, you are free to configure your own home network to share the connection, however, we are unable to provide support for any home networks or PC's that are not directly connected to BeCom Wireless.

The network is a point to multipoint network made up of a fast backbone and 802.11 based Customer Premises Equipment transmitting from base stations up to 3kms depending on the product.

It is possible for a connection to be established under such operating systems. We, however, do not support any such installation or configuration and will not be able to help you out if you experience any problems.

Probably. Any wireless receiver supporting the industry standard 802.11b or 802.11g protocols should work. However, in rare cases, we have found wireless receivers which had compatibility issues with the computer upon which it was installed.

Your computer must have a wireless network card installed. Computer manufacturers typically indicate this by saying their equipment is WiFi enabled, or that they support 802.11b or 802.11g wireless networks. On a Macintosh computer this is often referred to as an airport card.

The DWL-500 when in Ad-Hoc Mode can wirelessly connect up to 6 other wireless clients with unique IP's within the same subnet. The maximum allowable IP addresses within a Class C subnet is 254 IP addresses. For example, the DWL-500 client may have a private static IP address of 192.168.0.1, while 253 other wireless clients also have a unique static IP address of 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3, and 192.168.0.x... up to 253 static IP addresses.

Any computer with a network card can use our system. If you do not have a network card in your computer we can provide you with one at the time of the install for an additional fee.

You will need a laptop with a wireless network adapter that supports the 802.11b and/or 802.11g standards. If your laptop does not have built-in wireless, you may purchase a PC card from the University Bookstore or an electronics retail store. UM-St. Louis provides the Cisco VPN Client, which is required for network access. This software solution provides greater security in authentication and data transfer as compared to ordinary wireless networks.

A mobile PC or PDA equipped with a wireless network card. User must install the network card latest updates and firmware. Make sure that you are close to an area where there is wireless connectivity. User also needs appropriate credentials (username and password).

There are two parts of a wireless connection: a (usually powerful) wireless access point (WAP), and a (relatively puny) laptop, PDA, etc. The latter can often see one or more network access points, but not have enough power to reach them. This is particularly a problem for outdoor connections.

All of our wireless airports have been password protected. Please contact Pat Woodin (728-9555) for the password. The most common is that the user name and/or password are incorrect. In most cases, the user name is your first and last name. Some students use a more proper name than they are called. For example “Alex Smith” may have a login of “Alexander Smith”.

From the drop-down box next to Data Encryption choose Disabled if the wireless network does not require security settings. If the wireless network requires security, choose the appropriate options for Network Authentication, Data Encryption, and then type in the encryption key into the Network key field. The Passphrase setting or any key generator that populates the encryption or network keys will not work with Dell wireless cards.
