It is very easy to paint and clean up using these paints without having to use turpentine or other potentially hazardous solvents. Using mineral spirits for clean-up is a more involved process and includes concerns about disposal of the hazardous solvent at the end of the painting period. Oil-based and acrylic paints cannot be mixed. Acrylic paints are water-based. There is a new type of paint out now, called alkyd paint. Although it is water-based, alkyd paint can be used with oil paints. You can never paint in acrylic over a painting previously done in oil paint. If you, in addition, thin it with large amounts of solvents, it becomes even more matte and causes the paint to chalk quickly, shortening the paint's lifespan. Not if the emulsion is well hardened, washed and dried. If in doubt, a coat of water-based polyurethane to promote adhesion is a good idea (coat thinly to avoid streaks.) Or you can use Marshall's photo-oil paints. The unexposed areas will stay clear while the exposed areas will turn black, depending on the degree of exposure. Water present in oil induces rusting metals by adhering to the metal surface. The rusted metals are then released into oil, acting as catalyst to accelerate oil oxidation. With water present, the acceleration for oxidation is a few tens to a few hundreds of times as fast as without - it is more dangerous than dirt in some sense.
