Any healthy, fertile man, between 18 and 35 years of age, who meets the selection criteria established by Health Canada (no previous serious illness, no history of genetic illness, etc.) Several tests must be carried out before someone can be considered for the sperm donation program and during the period of donation.

In Switzerland, only married couples can benefit from sperm donation (Art 3 Al.3, LPMA).  The well being of the child is the key factor on which this law has been focussed.  In case of death or divorce, the child’s security is ensured. In Missouri, at the time of your death, your legal next-of-kin will be asked about your desire to donate. You can also sign a donor card, include your name on the Missouri Organ Donor Registry, and sign the back of your Missouri Driver’s License with a permanent marker.

Donors are relatives or close friends with a significant emotional tie to the recipient. They must have a compatible blood type and body size, as determined by the recipient's height and weight. In addition, donors must be between the ages of 18 and 60. They must also test negative for active or chronic hepatitis B and C and can have no serious medical conditions such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease.

Current sperm banking standards call for initial and interval testing for AIDS, Syphillis, and Hepatitis B and C. Donors are also tested for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia and undergo a battery of other tests.

No. Plateletpheresis is as safe and painless as a regular blood donation. The platelet donor is at no risk of contracting AIDS or any other infectious disease because of the donation. All components of the blood cell separator that come into contact with the donor's blood are sterile. Needles, tubing and collection bags are used only once and disposed of after the donation. The donor is not at risk of excessive bleeding.

The immune system produces substances called antibodies against the sperm.

If you live close to your clinic -- within 20-30 minutes drive -- you might be able to collect the sperm sample at home, otherwise the clinic will provide you with a room in which to collect it.

A fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or higher within 3 months prior to ART treatment may adversely affect sperm quality. Sperm count and motility may appear normal, but fertilization may not occur.
