Is the uke just a small guitar?

Flea Market Music flashback page offers pictures from ukulel...
Not really. There are many differences, but the biggest is probably the way it's tuned. The ukulele uses a type of tuning called "reentrant" tuning. In reentrant tuning, instead of the strings being tuned across the neck from high to low, one of the strings jumps up in pitch while its neighbors drop progressively. Reentrant tuning is found on other stringed instruments including the lute, Venezuelan cuatro and 5-string banjo.

I know how to play the guitar. Will I be able to play the uke?

Flea Market Music flashback page offers pictures from ukulel...
Yes, many chords forms are similar. For example, a D7 chord form on the guitar is a G7 on the uke. It's usually pretty easy for guitarists to make the switch, at least with the chording hand. Strumming and picking can be a little more difficult if you are used to using a plectrum, since we use our fingers. This is a common concern of former guitarists, but it's really not a problem. With a little practice, your hand will soon get used to the uke.

Joel Mabus FAQ
Just after 9/11/01 I bought a small Martin for airline travel and have wound up using it for most of my gigs and have recorded two albums with it -- 2002's Thumb Thump and 2004's Golden Willow Tree. It is a 00C15AE -- which means in "Martin-speak," a "00" size (grand concert or classical guitar shape) cutaway, all solid-wood mahogany (top as well) with rosewood fingerboard and bridge, "acoustic electric.

Are they just another "yappy" small dog?

Articles
No. They'll alert you when someone is at your dog and to strange noises outside your home. Otherwise, they are quiet. Although, some Havanese are more "vocal" than others. The Havanese is truly one of the most delightful of the small breeds. They are exceptionally intelligent and quick-witted. Their love of attention comes from their adorable little "show-off" natures. They are curious and busy constantly. They are natural clowns and enjoy interludes of rowdy, madcap play.

Why just guitar? Why exclude other instruments?

Untitled Document
There is no reason whatsoever to exclude other instruments from your jams, and many good reasons to include them. Our study groups, though, are not just jams. They are intended to help you move forward as a player, and many of the challenges we face as guitarists are different from those we would face as banjo, mandolin, violin or, for that matter, clarinet players. So we're setting aside time and space to work on our instrument in a focused way.

There are two main ways of sizing ukuleles. The first is to simply measure how long your uke is from top to bottom. The second and more accurate way, is to measure the string scale-length. This is done by finding the distance from where the strings leave the nut, to the center of the 12th fret, and doubling that measurement.

The back/soundboard wood I just bought for my acoustic guitar has cupped. Can I still use it?

Musical Instrument Makers Forum miniFAQ: Acoustic Guitar Mak...
Thin wood reacts quickly to changes in humidity, and needs to acclimate to the relative humidity of your shop. You should "sticker" the cupped boards to allow air to circulate all around them. Stickers are thin strips of wood or masonite or melamine that you put between each board, across the grain, to allow the air to get to them. Use three per board and sandwich the whole lot between boards of MDF or plywood, and put a weight on top for good measure.
