If you can only afford one, definitely go with the 2". I would say that most of my bowl, hollow form and faceplate work under 10" is done with a 2" pad. The pads are less expensive and so are the disks. 3" is great for the outsides of bowls and convex shapes and the inside of larger bowls or more gradual curves. Too tight of a curve and the 3" pad will only hit the edges of the disk and not the center. For large work and especially large platters, 3" is good.

The size of the pet is the determining factor. A small dog such as a Yorkie could use the same pad for 2 or more days. A large dog such as a German Shepherd could use two pads per day.
