The Satin finish is a matte finish and the easiest to maintain. Because it has a low sheen, it is very forgiving insofar as showing scratches, dents, and wear and tear over time. The Semi Gloss finish has some shine and is a little harder to maintain in that it will show scratches, dents and wear and tear sooner. The High Gloss finish is the hardest to maintain in that it shows everything - dust, dirt, scratches, dents, and wear and tear in general the quickest.

Make sure not to graduate too quickly from a 180 file to the white block. Try using the white block buffer a little longer than seems necessary. Be sure to wipe all grit and dust from the nail and the 3-way buffer, as even the smallest amount of dust will prevent a high gloss. Cuticle oil may be helpful. There may be a slight color variation from batch to batch. Allow the polish to dry completely before you decide it doesn't match.

Many of our butcher blocks feature a food-safe natural oil finish that seals and protects the wood and provides an ideal cutting surface. Natural oil is the finish to choose if you intend to cut upon your butcher block directly. For natural oil finish butcher blocks, it is recommended that you re-oil the surface every 4 weeks or so using a pure white mineral oil that you can purchase at a regular grocery store or hardware store.

In the 20th century, when solvent-based polyurethanes were common, gloss was harder wearing, because manufacturers used additives which weaken the finish to achieve a satin or matt look. However, with our range of water-based varnishes, there is no difference in durability between matt, satin and gloss finishes.

Basically, silk is the material the ribbon is woven from and satin is the type of weave that it is woven in. Check out our About Ribbon page for a complete glossary of ribbon terms.

They refer to the sheen or 'gloss' level of a paint, and it does make a difference which one you select. They simply refer to the level of light reflectance in the paint, so for example, matt will not appear shiny as it does not reflect the light, whereas gloss will be shiny.

I feel, because Gloss is more reflective than Satin, Gloss shows more dog nail scratches. I'd go with Satin.

All Minerelle worktops and cast sheets can be brought up to a high gloss level with additional polishing, however, we do not recommend it. High gloss surface are not practical as they require higher and more frequent maintenance. Please see our recommended finishing process in the "Fabrication and Installation" menu.

Make sure every coat is dry prior to applying another coat of paint. For an even higher gloss, you may purchase one of our clear coat pens from us.

The colored poles are powder-coated and have the most grip. The polished stainless steel poles have a smoother finish.

Matte canvas is a clean canvas surface that has no glare or reflection which will give a print an artistic feel. Gloss canvas has a gloss coating on the canvas that resembles the appearance of a photograph which does have a reflection in light.

Satin Weave is a basic weave, characterized by long floats of yarn on the face of the fabric. The yarns are weaved in such a way that there is no visible interlacing pattern, which gives the fabric a smooth, shiny surface.
