Williams students either bike or bus around Oxford. The Programme subsidizes some student transportation costs.

Students live in the Ephraim Williams House, just north of Oxford's City Center. Students live in comfortable twin-bedded rooms with common spaces and fully equipped kitchens. The premises are wired for internet access and have a recently expanded and upgraded library.

Oxford is simply one of the great cities of the world; it is, moreover, one of the smallest and thus most easily manageable of the great cities and certainly the easiest of them to make your own. As a student, on the "inside," you'll feel like an Oxonian within 48 hours of your arrival. Since first serving as a kind of early Saxon meeting place, Oxford has been a center of learning, culture, and achievement.

Both. They remain Williams students while in Oxford and the tutorial work they undertake in Oxford counts towards their degree requirements (and is calculated in their GPA) back at Williams. Nevertheless, they are formally Visiting Students at Oxford University, with an Oxford University ID (in lieu of a Williams ID), subject to many of the rules and regulations of Oxford University and enjoying most of the benefits of the University that are enjoyed by fully matriculated Oxford undergraduates.

Yes. Three Exeter College students live alongside Williams students at 2 and 4 Lathbury Road and help integrate Williams students with Exeter College life. Moreover, all Williams students must undertake the Freshers' Week orientation activities at Exeter, where they will meet many Exeter students. They are members of Exeter's Junior Common Room and can join all college clubs and societies-as they can those of the University at large.

For a long time, Oxford residents seemed to regard Faulkner as a kind of harmless eccentric - one nickname he was known by was “the Count” because of his apparent haughtiness. Later, the nickname expanded to “Count No-Count,” alluding to his apparent shiftlessness. When he began writing the great novels, most Oxford residents barely noticed - but at least one novel did pique their interest as well as their ire.

There is some flexibility in the kinds of courses that can be offered through Regent's Park, but their strengths will lie in what is commonly called the humanities or social sciences subjects in the United States. The following subject areas are the ones most commonly pursued: English, Philosophy, Religion/Theology, History, Art History, Economics, Politics, Classics, and Mathematics.

If you have a laptop, particularly one that automatically adapts to European (240v) current, you'll appreciate having it here. Life will be much easier, especially as you will be writing many essays and now that all rooms are wired for internet access. But you will also be ok without one. The Programme has a number of desktop machines on site, along with a couple of laptops that students can check out to use in libraries or in writing papers.

Travel to and from Oxford is easy. There are buses every half hour from both Heathrow and Gatwyck airports, about two hours one way. Buses also run every 15 or 20 minutes between Oxford and London, a trip of a little less than two hours. From the Oxford train station, a 15-minute walk from the College, you can travel throughout England, over to Dublin, up to Glasgow or Edinburgh, or even catch the train to Paris. Local buses connect Oxford to Wales, Bath, Stratford, and the Cotswolds.

Students may range in age from their twenties to their fifties. While some attended college, most have not. Many graduated high school, but some students entered prison with very little education and have worked their way through pre-GED, and GED programs. To qualify for the BU program, your students will have either taken 9 credits of correspondence courses or four courses in the Prep Program. Curbside pickup for recyclables is currently underway as a pilot program for several neighborhoods in Oxford. All residents that are not part of the pilot program can take their recyclables to the drop-off bins located at the City Maintenance facility on Molly Barr Road. Several bins are available for plastic containers (#1 & #2 only), newspaper, office paper, cardboard, and aluminum and steel cans.
