First you should clean the gel coat with a wax and grease remover. The gel coat is the white outer surface of the part. Next you should start by sanding with a 280 grit wet sandpaper, then with a 320 grit wet sandpaper. Follow the paint primer manufacturer's recommendation for final sanding. Make sure all surfaces are completely sanded, otherwise your primer and paint will not stick to the gel coat surface.

Great care should be taken before painting previous 'furniture' finishes, due to the high likelihood that silicone waxes and cleaners have been used on these surfaces. The presence of silicone can be expected to interfere with the ability of a wooden substrate to properly accept a paint finish. Silicone is present in most of the popular household waxes sold in the US Wood surfaces should be well abraded with a 150-grit paper to break up any existing finish, and then tacked clean. Before any paint hits the canvas a lot of prep work goes into each piece. The canvas is cut from a large bolt, shrunk with hot water, allowed to dry, and cut to size. Each piece has a sewn hem with carefully mitered, sewn and turned corners.(This is a Canvasworks trademark- I like to make the absolute best product which will stand up to years of wear.) Everything but the main body shell of the FIA is done in-house. We built all the molds from our own plugs. All door pieces, hood and trunk lid, and inner panels are hand laid at E.R.A. Mating of the inner panels to the outside skin is also done in-house. We don't use ordinary polyester resin, either. The main body, doors, trunk lid, hood and the inner panels are all hand-laid right here at our production facility. We use a high-temperature low-shrink resin and the best quality fiberglass mat. We don't use cloth because it will eventually print throug the gel coat and ruin the exterior paint's finish. After the main shell is laid, it is rough trimmed. Absolutely. POR-15 is fully compatible with fiberglass and can be used to repair cracks in gelcoat. It will adhere better than polyester resin and has greater strength. Use also with fiberglass cloth to make super-strong surfaces in rusted-out areas. But be aware that POR-15 doesn't contain styrene and thus cannot melt fiberglass cloth like polyester resin does.
