Reasons vary, but often young people who join gangs feel peer pressure, want protection, know gang members, want excitement, seek money, feel insecure, have an unhappy home life, grew up with violence, feel hopeless, or want a replacement for the family.

In a 1998 national school survey, 7 percent of boys and 4 percent of girls said they had belonged to a gang in the past 12 months (Gottfredson and Gottfredson, 2001). A survey of nearly 6,000 eighth graders conducted in 11 cities (that were known gang-problem localities) found that 11 percent were currently gang members (17 percent said they had belonged to a gang at some point in their young lives) (Esbensen and Deschenes, 1998).

People join gangs for numerous reasons. Usual reasons include: fun, excitement, a sense of belonging, a need for attention or status, companionship, intimidation, peer pressure, financial gain, protection and a failure to understand what being in a gang really means.

Sparky's Krew Club ? for energetic 5-11 year olds has some fantastic fun & games for the kids to join in with. The Mix ? for 12-16 year olds is a place to hang out, chill, meet people and get up to some pretty cool stuff along the way. These clubs are not child-minding facilities and children are not always supervised on playgrounds, etc.

Klee Kai love kids and do great with them as long as the child has been taught to respect the dog and not tease it. These dogs are small enough that an out of control child could cause serious damage. Most Klee Kai would give a child enough leeway that the child could cause serious damage before the dog could run. Good owners make good dogs. They do seem to have this sixth sense about the intentions of a child and will usually avoid a child with bad intentions.

Some of the gangs that have emerged in the past decade are noticeably different from those that emerged before the mid-1980s (Howell, Egley, and Gleason, 2002; Howell, Moore, and Egley, 2002). Most communities in the Chicago suburban area have gang members living within their jurisdiction. The Warrenville Police Department has identified some gang members living in the community. Although there are very few incidents of "anti-social gang behavior" in the community, even one incident is considered too many.
