This is an unfortunate result of the infamous b-frame lag that older versions of ffdshow (and DivX with "smooth playback" enabled) has. Upgrading to the newest CCCP (and not decoding DivX with DivX) will solve your problems as it now has a fixed ffdshow. If it still doesn't work: You may need to install a "code page" for the encoding of your subtitle. The encoding is usually in the subtitle name, for instance mymovie.big5.cn.avi

First boot KNOPPIX with the memory stick inserted. Got to the KNOPPIX menu, Configuration, Save Configuration. When asked, choose /dev/sda1. When booting type knoppix myconf=scan home=scan at the boot prompt. This is an issue with the Dell BIOS.
