The test originated from Australia but it is more popular with British Education system. Candidates can take this test at the British Council. Usually it is held twice a month. Yes. The minimum required TOEFL score is 600 for the written test, 250 for the computer-based test, and 100 for the Internet-based test. For the IELTS, we require a minimum score of 7.5 out of 10 on the academic module. We accept only academic module results.

IELTS is an examination in English language proficiency prepared by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, in association with the British Council and IDP Australia. This examination is an internationally recognised examination in communicative skills in English in two modules - Academic and General training. All candidates receive an overall result for the exam, as well as individual assessments of each of the four language skills.

Only those students whose first language is not English and whose first degree was not conducted in English are required to provide evidence of English Language proficiency. Certificates must be provided for any English Language qualifications obtained. These should be submitted with the application and remainder of the documentation.

You can send the rest of the application to us, even if you have not taken the TOEFL/IELTS. However we will not process your application without your TOEFL/IELTS score. You should fax us your unofficial scores as soon as you receive them and arrange with the test centre for the official score report to be sent to SMU.

TOEFL, IELTS or CPE (Cambridge EFL) can not be replaced by a certificate of Proficiency in English issued by your university. You are exempted from this requirement only if your native language is English, or if the primary language of instruction at the university where you obtained your previous degree is English (certificate required).

You are highly recommended to take a TOEFL/IELTS test as early as possible because once you are selected to go on exchange, you are required to provide a proof of English proficiency along with your admission application to the host university. If you are unable to attach a proof of English proficiency to the application, you are at your own risk that your admission application to the host university will be rejected.

Yes. If you submit different test results, we will consider and report your best overall performance based on the total score. If your scores are below average, we strongly recommend that you retake the test to increase your chances of admission.
