A male Witch is called a Witch. The word Warlock is thought to mean "oath-breaker", so we don't like to be called that. (I think the current scholarship suggests that Warlock may actually come from a scandinavian word for "spell-singer", but most Wiccans still think it means "oath-breaker", so it's best to avoid it.)

Male opossums are called jacks, and females are called jills. (Sound familiar?) The young are referred to as joeys, just like their Australian cousins. A group of opossums is called a passel.

Warlock is one of the offspring of the Magus, and as such is a prince of the Technarchy. Warlock is a mutant among his race, possessing compassion and the ability to care about other beings [FA #6]. It is worth noting that Warlock's differences were not explained as being a mutation until quite late in the New Mutants series, and that explanation was given by a different writer than the one who wrote the earier issues and created Warlock. Warlock has an unusual (for his race) outlook on life.

Not all Witches are Wiccan. They may believe in Witchcraft but don't follow The Rede - though for the most part the rituals and beliefs are quite similar. Wiccans that don't like to be called Witch have a number of reasons for their preference, but the typical one I've come across is that it feels like the magick is given more importance over the faith.

The short answer: Witch comes from the Old English Wicce (masculine) or Wicca (feminine) meaning "magician or diviner." Note that "cc" in Old English was pronounced "ch", so Wicca should actually be pronounced "witcha" although almost nobody does. Our modern definition adds the concept of a specific religious affiliation that is not present in the original word. The word Witch is not related to Wizard (from "wys" (wise)) which means a wise man or philosopher.

A traditional witch is one who practices a tradition of witchcraft that pre-dates modern neo-witchcraft movements, such as Wicca. Traditional Witchcraft is usually hereditary. Traditional witches are normally very hard to find and very secretive, so it is unlikely that you will find one advertising for students or trying to "educate the public" about witchcraft (handing out tracts, participating in public rituals, and so forth).

There are no ten commandments in Witchcraft, but there are some common expressions such as the "Wiccan or Witches Rede" and the "threefold law." According to most versions of the threefold law, whatever one does comes back to one three times; kind of an amplified karma. One short, rhymed version of the Wiccan Rede states "Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill: An it harm none, do what you will.

From the White on up. This is the one caste that can change. A person can start out with no Birthright Jewel and be called simply a Blood female/male and then acquire a White or Yellow (probably not more than that) at the Offering. At that point, the person would be identified as a witch/Warlord. Minimally, anyone in these castes would start out with a Birthright White. In these cases, the rank of the Jewel doesn't determine what they are, only how strong they are.

The Ewe/Fon word "Hounon" loosely translates as "Mother of the Ship." And though usually the initiatory title of a Mamaissii and/or Vodoun priest who may be initiated to both Mami Wata and the Vodou, it is also ascribed to a high male preist of the Vodou as well.

Male witches, contrary to popular belief, are simply called Witches. A Witch is a Witch is a Witch, that's it. Just as a note for those who are dead convinced that male Witches are called Warlocks, it is important to know that the term "Warlock" is actually a Scottish term which means "breaker of oaths", therefore it is an insult to call a Witch a Warlock.

Certainly. By the time you are to be accepted into membership in a Coven the hard lessons have been learned and the process of Initiation should be a time of joy and fellowship, not physical fear and apprehension. Solitary can self-initiate or dedicate.

There's no satisfactory answer to this one. Theoretically, even though the Italian "ballerina" means simply "female dancer," only a principal female dancer is supposed to be called a ballerina. If that restriction were universally observed, then the nearest male equivalent would be the French premièr danseur ("first dancer").

The Craft does not actively seek converts. We do not proselytize. We are willing to inform when asked, and training is available in varying degrees of formality. Some Witches believe that one must be born with the talent to become a Witch. Others believe that all people have the ability, and that becoming a Witch is simply a matter of training. Some people know from an early age that they are Witches; others come to the Craft as adults - most of us grew up in a tradition other than the Craft.

We get this question most often from pre-teens and adolescents who learn about magick from TV or their friends.

The answer to this question will vary according to whom you ask. The normal way is to study for years, but, "Either you have it in you, or you don't." Some are born into their tradition (Family Traditionals) and others simply "are," and may study and eventually be recognized and adopted into an existing tradition and considered as a member of the family.

A Trad Witch is a practitioner of British Traditional Witchcraft, or Trad Witchcraft. In principle, Trad Witches revere Nature and live in harmony with their surrounding energies, the spirits, and the gods (or God). We respect and try to use good judgment towards all others, and we work for a better planet and the betterment of mankind. Trad Witchcraft is a family of Trads or denominations in Traditional British Witchcraft.
