A sandwich adapter, which fits inbetween the spin-on oil filter and the block, is utilised to circulate the engine oil to the oil cooler. On air-cooled VW engines a special adapter is used to circulate the engine oil to the oil cooler, because it does not have a spin-on oil filter.

You got the oil cooler as part of one of the preferred equipment options on a 6 speed car, or if you ordered an automatic equipped car with the performance rear axle. GM designs adequate cooling into it's vehicles based on GVW and GCW ratings and factory engine HP ratings, and comply with Allison's own standards for cooling capacity. If additional transmission coolers are added, great care needs to be taken to insure proper installation.
