The blue whale is the largest animal on earth (growing larger than even the biggest of dinosaurs were). A 100 foot blue whale is as long as three school buses. Blue whales grow to about 70 to 80 feet in the northern hemisphere (north of the equator) and 90 to 100 feet in the southern hemisphere (south of the equator). Female blue whales grow larger than males. The longest blue whale ever recorded was 110 feet.

Whales can stay under water for over an hour. When the Arctic Ocean freezes over, whales must search for open stretches of water to get a breath of fresh air.

Our trips are three to four hours long, depending upon the location of the whales. While the whales remain the primary focus of this tour, you will also observe other marine wildlife as well as experience the beautiful waterways of Southern Vancouver Island.

Smile and count your lucky stars. If you are concerned that a whale is coming at your kayak and doesn't know that you are there, simply knock on the hull of the kayak and they will get the message. Our philosophy is that we do not approach within 100m of a whale, nor do we encircle whales should we see them. Aerogel has a blue cast for the same reason that the sky is blue. The very small particles that compose the aerogel scatter blue light, the same as our atmosphere scatters blue light. Similarly, when you look through the aerogel the light appears yellowish or reddish, like that of a sunrise or sunset.

No one knows for sure. There are several theories as to why the ocean is usually blue. Some scientists believe that when sunlight hits seawater, part of the white light is absorbed and part is reflected. White light is composed of various shades (all the colors in the rainbow). Seawater does not absorb blue light, so the blue light is reflected outwards. Some scientists believe that suspended matter in the sea is responsible for its blue color.

A hospital may keep a person on Blue Paper admission for 3 days, not counting the day of admission. If the third day is on a weekend or legal holiday, then the hospital can make the person stay until the next business day. It is possible to see them on all of our trips. But their numbers are dwindling. At the end of the day it is luck as to weather or not you will see them. They have not been common over the last couple of years.

Dress warmly and wear flat shoes. If you wish to spend time on the outside decks of our vessels you may need light waterproof clothing depending on the sea conditions.
