A mail client, or mail reader, is a program that you use to connect to Earthnet's mail server. This program knows how to get your messages from the server, and send new messages through the server. Several popular mail clients are Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, etc.

E-mail clients are used to compose, send and receive e-mail. They are software applications that are installed on your machine. The e-mail client "talks" to the server where your mail is sent from and delivered. An e-mail server is a powerful computer that manages mail by storing messages, routing messages to other servers and generating error messages when things don't work quite right.

Your email address is your login ID followed by @speed.net. For example, if your login ID was "bob", your email address would be bob@speed.net. On older versions of Eudora, your POP account is your login ID followed by the POP server (examples: bob@mail.speed.net, bob@dialup-pop.speed.net). It looks like an email address, but it isn't. We recommend turning on secure connections for both sending and receiving.

The Cyrus system is a modern system based on Kerberos and the IMAP protocol. The Cyrus mailbox can be accessed by the "pine" application on andrew Unix computers, or "anpine" on the qwe and phys private systems. For Windows and MacOS, the Computing Services recommends "Mullberry". On the andrew e-mail systems Usenet newsgroups and local Bboards are available upon subscription. The e-mail reader is used also as newsreader.

Always configure your mail client to delete messages from the server once you download them. There is no reason to store messages on the mail server if you have downloaded a copy to your computer. You can do this in one of two ways. Clicking the e-mail icon located at the bottom of any article will launch your own local e-mail application, and will send a link to that article on NYTimes.com. The recipient does not need to view the article in Times Reader. If you use a web mail service like Yahoo or Google, right click on the article in TimesReader which will give you the option to "open in browser.

Web-based e-mail means that your e-mail account is actually a web site, providing global access to your e-mail from any Internet-connected computer. Once you have connected to the Internet via a network or Internet service provider just visit http://mail.myutahjazz.com/ and log into your account. This is different from client-based e-mail in which you need to connect directly (most times from your own computer) to your network or Internet service provider to access your account.

The only things you should need are your username and password which you setup through the Admin Control Panel along with the POP server details which are tied to your domain name (where "yourdomain.com" is your domain name):-

Yes, most e-mail clients will allow you to configure a Directory Server profile to search for addresses. The settings are as follows:

Click Start->Run... and type a command line "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg in the Open box (change it if your OE is installed to different location). Click Start->Settings->Control Panel->Internet Options, select the Programs tab and make sure that OE is now a default e-mail client. Start OE and on the Tools menu click Options..., select the General tab and make sure that the Make Default button is grayed (it means that OE is now a default e-mail client).
