If my baby learns signs, will he still learn to talk ?

Sing and Sign, baby signing classes helping babies communica...
Yes, of course he will! Signs are never used instead of words and your baby will be greatly encouraged to communicate verbally, not in any way discouraged. Baby signing is not a replacement for talking to your baby, in practice it encourages you to talk more! The use of gesture is a natural form of early communication and doesn't get in the way of learning to talk, other than to give it a boost!

When will my baby be ready to learn signs?

Sing and Sign, baby signing classes helping babies communica...
From around 6-8 months, children become increasingly receptive to language. You can start using some key signs from this age. Your baby will start to use these signs when he or she is ready and in the meantime will get a great deal of benefit from simply being signed to in the early stages. This is a sometimes underestimated stage of the process, which is very valuable for your baby!l The Sing and Sign programme puts no pressure on babies to sign early.

When will my baby parrot learn to talk?

FAQ
Practice, practice. Repeat, repeat. As a breeder I talk to the babies a lot, that is how they learn from an early age. It takes time and patience. Some may not start talking right away and you think they are not learning, but they are and its a matter of time. They will practice to themselves. Parrots love to mimic sounds as well. So keep talk to them until you are blue in the face!

How long will it take for our baby to produce the signs?

SmallTalk Learning: FAQ
This depends on several factors such as how old your child is, how frequently caregivers are using the signs, and how interested the child is in communicating. Some parents get results in a few days and others wait several weeks or even months. As discussed above, consistently using a few key signs on a daily basis, setting the stage to give your child an opportunity to communicate using signs, and promptly responding to your child's version of the sign are all important factors.

Why is our baby not signing even after we have been using signs for a while?

SmallTalk Learning: FAQ
As discussed above, a variety of factors play into how quickly a child begins using the signs to communicate. We do not look at the process as a race to see who gets to the finish line first. We encourage you to use the signs on a consistent basis, set the stage to give your child an opportunity to communicate, and respond to your child when they have made an effort to form a particular sign.

are the baby signs useful for them once they have stopped?

Yes. Many young children continue to use the signs either when they are really tired last thing at night or first thing in the morning and they want, for example, some milk. Signs can also be used when they are trying to reinforce a message to you, usually because it is urgent, for example, because they really want their food NOW (!) or because they are really excited, for example when they see lots of ducks in the park! If a little brother or sister comes along too….

what baby signs should I start with?

You can sign many things to your baby but make them relevant to your baby's world. Your baby should be able to see each object at the same time as you give the sign and the spoken word for each one. However explicitly teach, several times each day, just one or two signs, such as ‘milk’ and ‘food’.

ASHA: Q & A about Articulation Problems
articulation problem sometimes sounds like baby talk because many very young children do mispronounce sounds, syllables, and words. But words that sound cute when mispronounced by young children interfere with the communication of older children or adults. Older children and adults have so many severe errors that their articulation problems are very different from "baby talk."
