If you select an image as the background, you need to click on the "Use background image" option and the image you selected will become the background, while the colored background will be ignored.

I usually don't bother with the E2 correction for a first look at the data. Then, if I see problems with the background subtraction, such as differences in the background subtraction for different reaction channels (e.g. 4n undersubtracted, 5n oversubtracted at around 1.4 MeV) then I try using the E2 correction.
