A copy of a document filed in your divorce case can generally be obtained from the Judicial District Clerk's Office in the court location where the divorce took place. Your divorce decree is referred to as the "Judgment File." The Clerk's Office will need your case name and docket number (the number that was assigned to the case), and there are fees for copying and certifying.

Divorce Decrees are filed within this office. Bring with you your index number, date of the action, and title of the action. Please be advised, only the parties involved or the attorney of record can obtain these documents. The fee for a certified copy of these records is $5.00 minimum for the first 4 pages and $1.25 for each additional page. If you are unable to come to the Office of the County Clerk, please send us your request in writing with your signature notarized.

You may obtain a copy of your divorce decree from the Clerk of Superior Court in the county in which the divorce action was filed. Ordinarily there will be a fee for a copy of the decree.

You may obtain a copy from the court where the divorce became final, Or you can obtain one with your Town Clerk’s office. To obtain a copy from the Town Clerks office the divorce must have been finalized between 1990 and six months prior to the request. Divorce Decree Certificate Application

Divorce records are generally in two parts: DIVORCE RECORDS & DIVORCE DECREES and are available through the Alaska Court System only. DIVORCE CERTIFICATES are available through the Bureau of Vital Statistics. DIVORCE RECORD: A divorce record is all of the pages filed in a divorce. In some divorce settlements the records can be several pages long. DIVORCE DECREE: A divorce decree is a ruling that summarizes the rights and responsibilities of the divorced parties.

Vital Statistics does not record divorces. Contact the court house in the town or city where the divorce was granted. (See Alberta Courts.) Court files are available for copying in the court where the case is filed. Copying fees are charged per page and vary in different levels of court. To get specifics on copying procedures, check with the clerk’s office in the court where the case is filed. Each division of court has a set of rules that govern its procedure. Call the Clerk of Courts in the county where you were divorced and ask them to send you a copy of your decree. They may charge a small fee to make copies.

This is a copy, not an original, but it contains a certified stamp or raised seal prepared by the clerk of the court and signed by the judge. The Petitioner prepares the Decree for signature by the judge or commissioner. When preparing the Decree, it is important to repeat as closely as possible what was requested in the Petition. When a case ends by default, the court generally cannot issue orders that differ from what the Petition originally requested. (For example, if the Petition does not ask for financial support for a spouse, the Decree cannot order that the Respondent pay support.

A divorce decree may not always absolve you from your bills. You may still be obligated to repay the joint debts you and your ex-spouse incurred while married. This applies even if a divorce judge directs your ex-spouse to pay a bill. It's best to consult a lawyer about such questions.

A copy of an extract decree of divorce can be obtained from the court where the decree was granted. If the divorce was granted on or after 1 May 1984, contact the General Register Office for Scotland, Extract Services Unit.

If all the paperwork is in order and the defendant has signed all required documents before the final decree is scheduled to be signed, only the plaintiff (the person who filed the initial petition) must appear in court.
