Not all drivers are created equal. On my Laptop which has a Savage IX chipset, the Windows ME driver scales in hardware but the Windows 2000 driver does it in software. Until I change to mode 31 (800x600) with square pixels, RedSquirrel runs at 0.1 Mips under Win2k. If this happens to you, make sure you are running in 'software scale' mode.

There are a number of reasons why RedSquirrel could run slowly. Firstly it is a very processor intesive program that requires quite a powerful PC to emulate even an old Archimedes machine. You should curently expect to get about 1 mip for every 100Mhz of processor speed you have on an intel PII/PIII processor. Software audio cards such as AC97 codecs will take a significant proportion of your processor time and slow down RedSquirrel.

Microsoft has set up 2000 so that program "controls" will not work unless an entry is made in the Windows Registry saying the they were properly installed. Hurrah for Microsoft eh? In their infinite wisdom the DOS version supplied with XP is some kind of emulated (read: slow) effort. You can try tinkering with the compatibility settings but you'll probably have more luck launching it from a Windows 98 boot disk (or CD, or USB Pen Drive..)

You can configure your computer to start Windows 2000, Windows NT, and either Windows 95 or Windows 98. However, you cannot configure a computer to multiple boot Windows 95 and Windows 98. There is a redundant "keep alive" packet used by the client software. It has been know to cause occasional problems. You can disable it by going to options->disable keep alives in you your Nortel Extranet Client. The most likely reason is that your computer is not configured for file sharing on a network.
