Arbutus Middle sponsors several after-school activities. In spoken language, the different sounds created by words and tones of voice (intonation) are the most important devices used to communicate. Sign language is based on the idea that sight is the most useful tool a deaf person has to communicate and receive information. Thus, ASL uses hand shape, position, and movement; body movements; gestures; facial expressions; and other visual cues to form its words.

Parents are often the source of a child's early acquisition of language. A deaf child who is born to deaf parents who already use ASL will begin to acquire ASL as naturally as a hearing child picks up spoken language from hearing parents. However, language is acquired differently by a deaf child with hearing parents who have no prior experience with ASL. Some hearing parents choose to introduce sign language to their deaf children.

It depends on the individual. Language fluency requires extensive time, study, immersion in the language community, and constant practice. After taking the two language classes that are prerequisites for acceptance into the DSP, you should be able to handle communication of simple concepts of daily life. ASL is a non-profit school and receives no financial support from governments or religious institutions. Tuition income, charitable gifts and other fundraising make up the yearly operating budget. Donations provide the excellence in programming that is the hallmark of an ASL education. In the past, corporations often paid their employees' school fees, as well as helped the School with, for example, building projects, and ASL is extremely grateful to have had this support.

A school's endowment is its savings account. A large endowment ? well invested ? guarantees a source of income beyond tuition and gift revenue. Endowments protect a school from having to make large tuition increases and allow it to plan strategically for the future. For many years, because of UK charity laws, ASL was not able to build a significant endowment. Charity laws regarding endowment have changed recently, however, and ASL expects to expand the School's endowment in the years ahead.

CASE stands for Conceptually Accurate Signed English. As stated above, with Signed English ASL signs are used in English word order. The "Conceptually Accurate" phrase refers to the use of signs that are conceptually in line with the meaning of the word. For example in the sentence "I can't afford to go to the movie because I don't have any bread." The ASL sign for BREAD is not used, instead the ASL sign MONEY will be used since it reflects the meaning of the English word.
