Organisms, Craspedacusta sowerbii that are occasionally seen in our reservoirs that look like small marine jellyfish actually belong to a different taxonomic class, Hydrozoa, which includes the common hydra. These mostly translucent organisms are about the size of a quarter and feed on tiny zooplankton. Large, non-translucent gonads hang on their underside make them easier to spot on sunny days during the late summer.

Symptoms: Fish look like they have little white salt grains on them and may scratch against objects in the tank. White spot disease (Ichthyopthirius multifiliis) is caused by aprotozoan with a life cycle that includes a free-living stage. Ich grows on a fish --> it falls off and attaches to gravel or tank glass --> it reproduces to MANY parasites --> these swarmers then attach to other fish.

Moon jellies are certainly the most common, but several others occasionally make landing. Portuguese man-of-war can often be blown in with a strong storm from the South. Sea Nettle, Mushroom Jellies, and cabbage Head Jellies are also known to be off the coast and can be blown into shore. Lions Mane Jelly Fish are among the rarest to wash up. They can be as large as 8 feet across and have tentacles 100 feet long.

On the whole, no! We do occasionally get some stingers in the water, but they generally only stay around for a week or two. A wet suit is your best bet against getting stung.

The Channel is too cold and dirty for sharks. On the other hand, the channel is replete with jellyfish. The stings are not fatal but are very painful. Usually this happens as I am taking a stroke and what feels like three or four electrified barbed wires are being dragged across my skin- jellyfish tentacles. The skin usually burns for five minutes and then goes numb. Impressive scars then surface the next day. No channel swimmer is complete without his or her own collection!

Yes, it is possible to use a protein skimmer in freshwater. But it makes no sense. The freshwater usage of skimmers does not justify the purchase. The benefits of skimming are only profitable in saltwater - that is why it is commonly believed that skimmers only work in salt. Unless you have scientific information about why the skimmer will work in your fresh environment, it is not advisable to waste your money!

Fiddler crabs need access to air and are escape artists. They also do best in a brackish water aquarium, that is a tank with a specific gravity (salinity measurement) of 1.008. They can be kept in freshwater, but in many cases they will only live 2-6 months. You must provide them a way to get above the water, and the aquarium must be completely covered. Otherwise, they will escape every time. There are also red claw crabs. These are sold as freshwater crabs, but this is open to debate as well.
