What is Soot and what causes it?

Decorating with HGPgal
Soot is a natural by-product of incomplete combustion and is comprised mainly of carbon particles. Fireplaces, stoves, furnaces and cooking can all cause soot to form. To prevent your candle from producing soot keep the wick trimmed to a quarter of an inch (use our wick trimmer and snuffer set) and in a properly vented area with no drafts. Should you need to place your candle in a less-than-perfect area, please use it with our candle chimney to reduce soot and uneven burning. See similar questions...

What causes soot?

Candle Light Solutions : FAQ's
Soot is produced when incomplete combustion occurs. The flame does not burn efficiently and carbon particles (soot) are produced. Several factors affect combustion and contribute to this occurrence. The wick’s access to oxygen. Jar or container candles can reduce the air flow. Ensure a good air flow around the candle with drafts. Elevate the base of hurricane or lamp globe with a coin or small thin object to allow air flow around the candle from the bottom Impurities in the wax. See similar questions...

What causes black soot on glass?

Gas & Electric Lighting - Faq
Without knowing how long the lanterns have been lit, it is challenging to pinpoint the cause. With normal usage and over time, a gray fog will appear inside the glass. Heavy carbon build up over a short period of time is not "normal" and is a strong indicator of poor design and/or manufacturing. See similar questions...

What is soot?

The Ecological Candle Co. - Frequently Asked Questions - Han...
Soot is created by the combustion of wax, wick, fragrance and additives. The fewer additives a candle contains, the cleaner the candle will burn. Unlike paraffin, burning soy wax does not produce any harmful toxins and does not contribute to negative indoor air quality. Although soy wax is not completely soot free, it does not produce the thick black soot common to paraffin candles. See similar questions...

WHAT ARE THE SOURCES OF SOOT POLLUTION?

FAQ > Soot > Clean Air Act > Get Involved > Sierra Club
Soot is produced by coal combustion, coal and coal ash handling, high-temperature industrial process like smelters and steel mills, rock crushing, agricultural operations including concentrated animal feeding operations, roadway dust and vehicle fumes, cement and steel plants, mining operations, farming, tire and brake wear, and fires. Soot, or particulate matter, includes both solid material and liquid droplets. See similar questions...

How can I prevent that ugly soot from falling into my beautiful candle?

EmagesBeauty.com Frequently Asked Questions
Mushrooming of the wick caused by a carbon build up at the tip of the wick creates soot.. To prevent this from happening, do not burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. When the candle is cooled, turn it upside down and trim wick to a nub with scissors or clippers. See similar questions...

What is soot and how can it be avoided?

FAQ
Soot is created when a flame exceeds 1 inch in length. Keep the wick trimmed to avoid such a high flame. The quality of wax will also determine how much soot a candle will produce. Scented Specialties uses only the finest premium wax blends ensuring one of the cleanest burns possible. Also, drafts cause candle flames to flicker and smoke is released when a flame is disturbed. Keep candles out of drafts. Scented Specialties recommends using some sort of "candle topper" with jar candles. See similar questions...

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF EXPOSURE TO SOOT?

FAQ > Soot > Clean Air Act > Get Involved > Sierra Club
Since 1997, when the EPA first set particle standards, more than 2,000 scientific studies have shown links between particulate matter and a host of illnesses. In California, the California Air Resources Board has found that premature deaths linked to particulate matter are now at levels comparable to deaths from traffic accidents and second-hand smoke. WHAT ARE THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF SOOT POLLUTION?

FAQ > Soot > Clean Air Act > Get Involved > Sierra Club
Soot pollution plays a major role in the formation of haze, which obscures our ability to enjoy vistas in parks, skylines in cities, and the stars at night. See similar questions...

WHAT STANDARD SHOULD BE APPLIED TO SOOT POLLUTION?

FAQ > Soot > Clean Air Act > Get Involved > Sierra Club
Because soot can be dangerous whether inhaled over a short-term (measured daily) or over a long-term at lower levels (averaged annually), the standard has two parts. In this latest round, EPA lowered the daily limit from 63 to 35 micrograms per cubic meter of air and kept the same annual standard of 15 micrograms per cubic meter of air. See similar questions...

WHY DID EPA ISSUE NEW SOOT STANDARDS?

FAQ > Soot > Clean Air Act > Get Involved > Sierra Club
Our nation's Clean Air Act requires the EPA to protect the health of the American people and our environment from air pollution. Using the best available scientific evidence, EPA is required to set limits for pollutant levels in our air low enough and with "a margin of safety" sufficient to protect everyone including the people most sensitive to air pollution.
