We'll let Money Magazine answer this one. An article on swimming pools stated that "one piece fiberglass pools are easiest to maintain". The story noted that "vinyl liner pools can develop a tear in the liner from a sharp belt buckle" and "the entire liner slowly deteriorates in sunlight" and must be periodically replaced. Money noted that gunite pools are more expensive and because the "plaster surface is rougher than ... fiberglass it is more hospitable to algae and bacteria.

We build and install both. Gunite pools are custom and more personal. They cost more and take longer to install, but we feel the added time is clearly worth it. Building a gunite pool is like building your own house, you get to pick all the details and when it is complete, you will generally feel better about it since you helped design it. Everything but the main body shell of the FIA is done in-house. We built all the molds from our own plugs. All door pieces, hood and trunk lid, and inner panels are hand laid at E.R.A. Mating of the inner panels to the outside skin is also done in-house. We don't use ordinary polyester resin, either. The main body, doors, trunk lid, hood and the inner panels are all hand-laid right here at our production facility. We use a high-temperature low-shrink resin and the best quality fiberglass mat. We don't use cloth because it will eventually print throug the gel coat and ruin the exterior paint's finish. After the main shell is laid, it is rough trimmed.
