The University does have wireless hotspots available for use free of charge. These are available in libraries, foyers, bars, team rooms, many departments and central areas in most halls - but they don't cover the study bedrooms. Wired and wireless are complementary - wired provides a much faster connection but wireless would be convenient especially if you have more than one computer. We are planning a wireless ResNet pilot to cover rooms in one of the student houses in 07/08.

We can provide ResNet connections to members of the University who live in University owned accommodation. You are defined as a member of the University if you appear in the central University database of students, staff, and postgrads. If you are a member of the University before we can process your ResNet application you must have an email address @bristol.ac.uk. All new undergrads and new members of staff are automatically registered.

Our ResNet program uses 100base-T. Our entire ResNet program uses standard RJ-45 type connectors for our connections. Crossover Ethernet cables will not work on our system. The length of your patch cable will depend on where you decide to place your computer in your room. For most areas a 25-foot patch cable will allow you to place your computer anywhere in your room.
