It is important to install a smoke detector on every floor of your residence. It is also a good idea to place a detector in every bedroom. Remember, smoke travels up and out so place detectors where the smoke will go first. You should test every detector once a month. A good rule of thumb for changing your batteries is to change them when you change your clocks in the spring and fall. There are new smoke detectors with ten-year batteries.

Smoke and deadly gases tend to spread faster and farther than heat which is why an operating smoke detector is so important to have. More people die from the effects of smoke and deadly gases by a margin of 2 to 1. A smoke detector will automatically sound a warning when they sense smoke or other products of combustion. When people are warned early enough about a fire, they can escape before it spreads.

All homes should have a smoke detector in or near sleeping areas. Smoke detectors can be wired into the existing electrical system (with a battery backup) or battery operated. Smoke detectors have a life expectancy of 10 years. So change the batteries at least once per year, and replace the smoke detector after 10 years or when the detector fails to work and/or test properly. The difference between smoke and heat detectors is obvious by the name. Smoke detectors are more sensitive to sensing smoke; heat detectors are more sensitive to changes in temperature. They both detect fire typical parameters, however they are not interchangeable. A smoke detector warns of fire when it senses the products of combustion (soot) in the atmosphere.

Working smoke detectors can alert you to a fire in your home in time for you to escape, even if you are sleeping. Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, including the basement, and outside each sleeping area. If you sleep with the door closed, install one inside your sleeping area as well. Test detectors every month, following the manufacturer's directions, and replace batteries once a year, or whenever a detector "chirps" to signal low battery power.

Where you place smoke detectors depends on the size and layout of your home, and where people sleep in your home. Since the primary job of a smoke detector is to awaken sleeping persons and warn them of urgent danger, put a detector in each sleeping room and place additional detector(s) in the hallway or area by the bedrooms within five feet of the door to these rooms. In a house where the bedrooms are upstairs, one additional detector should be near the top of the stairs to the bedroom area.

Your smoke detector should be positioned in your house ideally on the ceiling, or on the wall, between 4-6 inches away from the ceiling-wall intersection. Be sure to place your smoke detector: On the ceiling, at least six inches away from the wall.

People who are hard-of-hearing also need the protection that smoke detectors provide. Smoke detectors for the hearing impaired are smoke detectors that have a strong strobe light attached to the circuitry. When the smoke detector sense the smoke, the strobe light begins blinking. Ionization Detector works by forming an electrical path inside the smoke detector with a very small amount of radioactive material. When smoke enters the detector, the smoke molecules attach themselves to the ions and change the electrical current. This change in the current triggers the alarm. Photoelectric Detector works by containing a light source (like a small light bulb) and a photocell that is activated by light. Usually, the light never reaches the photocell.
