Question: What amount of brakes would you use to obtain best L/D (lift/drag), and why?

Free Flight FAQ
This will be entirely dependent on the conditions. Certain conditions require the application of more breaks to enhance your glide ratio which is effectively the same as the L/D (lift/drag) ratio, as apposed to less brakes under other conditions. Flying into stronger winds would require less application of the brakes (possibly 5% to 25% brakes) as opposed to flying into lighter penetrating winds where more brake application would be necessary (possibly 25 % - 50%).

What about brakes?

Welcome to Kugel Komponents

Do you have any engine brakes or exhaust brakes for Gasoline engines?

Jacobs Vehicle Systems - Frequently Asked Questions
Because of the low back pressure limits of gasoline engines, the performance of a gasoline exhaust brake would not be substantial. Because the air intake in a gasoline engine is throttled and the compression ratio is much lower than in a diesel, the performance of a gasoline engine brake would also be insignificant. Because of this we do not offer any retarders for gasoline engines. See similar questions...

What is a drag queen?

Frequently Asked Questions about Transvestism, Transsexualit...
Some homosexuals enjoy the theatrical parody of women and are known as 'drag queens'. The term is believed to have originated with Elizabethan theatre. In those days women were not allowed to perform, so the parts were played by boys or small, slightly men. Female costumes were heavy and were dragged across the stage. No known bio-chemical (biological) cause can be demonstrated to exist. See similar questions...

Can synergy do drag and drop between computers?

Synergy Frequently Asked Questions
No. That's a very cool idea and it'll be explored. However, it's also clearly difficult and may take a long time to implement. Yes, as of 1.0.12 synergy has full support for AltGr/Mode-switch. That includes support for most (all?) European keyboard layouts. All systems should be using the same keyboard layout, though, for all characters to work. (Any character missing from a client's layout cannot be generated by synergy.) There is experimental support for ISO_Level3_Shift in 1.1.3. See similar questions...

How are engine brakes controlled?

Jacobs Vehicle Systems - Frequently Asked Questions
Typically, under good road conditions, the driver enables the retarder and selects a level of retarding with selector switches on the dash. To activate the brake, two more conditions must be met: clutch is engaged (or automatic transmission is in lock-up), and no fuel to the engine (foot off the pedal). Under these conditions, voltage is applied to the engine brake solenoids, and the brake is activated. See similar questions...

What are Drag Kings and Drag Queens?

BRAKES - Can I upgrade to bigger brakes?

Dexter Axle - Trailer Axles and Running Gear Components - FA...
No, the different brake sizes offered by Dexter are not interchangable on existing axles. There are only a few cases where you may be able to upgrade with stronger magnets and more aggressive linings. Typically the problem that causes weak brakes is underadjustment in the smaller brakes that require frequent manual adjusting (See: How often should I adjust my brakes?) or insufficient brake voltage in the electric brakes (see: Why aren't my electric brakes working properly). BRAKES - How often should I adjust my brakes?

Dexter Axle - Trailer Axles and Running Gear Components - FA...
Dexter recommends that manual adjust brakes should be adjusted . . . 1) After the first 200 miles of operation when the brake shoes and drums have "seated" 2) At 3,000 mile intervals 3) Or as use or performance requires. See similar questions...

Why can't I just screw down the drag on the spinning reel?

Conventional Reels Frequently Asked Questions - Article by B...
Modern reels are a lot easier to use than old ones. There is a learning curve, but it's pretty easy. Most current conventional reels have an anti-backlash mechanism, a brake, that slows the spool as it turns over the course of a cast. This will save you a lot of grief, though you still have to use your reel hand thumb. Older reels, like the Penn Squidder, require more skill to use. There are a few modern reels without a brake, and we'll get to those. See similar questions...

What is drag? Why should I worry about it?

Motion Sensors, Inc. - For Magnetic and Custom Sensors, Elec...
Drag is the influence of a speed sensor's internal magnet on the target. Usually drag does not affect target devices like gears, shafts, or rotors that are being driven. However, in applications like turbine flowmetering where the turbine blades are free spinning and turn based on the pressure and flow of the fluid or gas flowing through the meter, drag could retard or hinder its ability to turn freely. This is especially true in small diameter meters and low flow applications. See similar questions...

What is Aerodynamic Drag ?

Frequently Asked Questions
Aerodynamic Drag is the natural resistance to an object moving through air. In a VWT this resistance counteracts gravity, allowing a person to fly. See similar questions...

What are Deep Brakes and why are they important?

Consolidated Rigging - Frequently Asked Questions
Deep Brake Settings (DBS) refers to setting the canopy's deployment brakes deeper than normal in an effort to control opening surge. There is no question that for BASE jumping it is desirable to pack your canopy in deeper deployment brakes than are generally used in skydiving. DBS on deployment reduce opening surge. This produces cleaner (slider down) openings, allows more time to react to an off-heading opening and effectively lessens the possibility of a line over malfunction. See similar questions...

What kind of brakes do you use?

FIA Frequently Asked Questions
Our pedals are mounted directly on the chassis, below floor level, like the original, with aluminum pivoting faces. In the front we use 11" diameter x 1" wide vented rotors with floating calipers. These were originally mounted on the front of much heavier cars and are more than adequate for street use. 12.1" and 12.8" rotors with Wilwood calipers are optional. In the rear 10.5" diameter x 1/2" thick rotors are mounted inboard to reduce unsprung weight. 10. See similar questions...

What if the brakes fail?

FAQ
The braking system is automatic. It does not rely on human control. The parts are subject to continuous automatic inspection and replaced before unacceptable wear occurs. Multiple redundant backup braking is activated if any failure occurs in the primary braking system. Compared with automobiles, trains and airplanes, failure of ETT braking systems are unlikely.
