General The Bulldog is a beautiful dog (see Q11, Q12) which was originally bred for Bullbaiting, and although the dog may look strange to people with no class and culture, one must keep in mind that virtually all of its physical traits were tailored for Bullbaiting. Originally, Bulldogs were most likely a cross between a Pug (which was imported from China by the Portuguese in the mid to late 16th century), and the progeny of the Alaunt/Mastiff crosses.

Bulldogs are generally known to be very good with children. It is best when the bulldog is raised with a child as a puppy. Most important, the child must understand how to treat the dog, and they should never be left together unsupervised. Bulldogs see children as playmates, and sometimes they don't know their own strength. They are strong dogs, and can easily knock over a child during play.

In the historical sport of bull-baiting, the wrinkles served the purpose of keeping the bull's blood away from the bulldog's eyes. The blood would flow down the bulldog's face, around the eyes, under the chin and downward.

Again, during bull-baiting, the physical design of the bulldog's nose and jaw helped the dog to continue to hold the bull tightly, while still allowing the dog to breathe easily.

When the bull actually shook the bulldog off, the loose joints helped to prevent serious structural injuries when landing on the ground.

a breed, they have large heads and small hips and therefore small birth canals. Puppies can easily get stuck in the birth canal. This makes whelping much more difficult on the bitch, and can possibly cause respiratory distress. In this situation, there is a chance of losing both the bitch and any puppies that are stuck. Additionally, bulldog bitches, due to their high tolerance for pain, often ignore nature's signals to "push" the puppies out.

I purchased my first Frenchie, "Chevy", in January 1991, and have been hooked on this wonderful breed ever since.

My first Frenchie litter was whelped late 1991, and consisted of one female puppy, a brindle girl named Sagan, that I kept, of course. So, I've been raising Frenchies well over 13 years now.

There are officially 2 main types, Johnson and Scott, named after the 2 men that nurtured the breed into what it is today. Of course there are many American Bulldogs that have neither Johnson or Scott blood in them or have a mix so the wider terms, Classic and Standard are popular today to describe the two main types.

Males range from 75 pounds to 130 pounds, females range from 65 pounds to 120 pounds. Ideally a male should be 110 pounds and 25 inches at the withers, a female should be 90 pounds and 24 inches at the withers.

Most well socialized French Bulldogs do not bite under ordinary circumstances. Sadly, not all our rescues have been well socialized. Dogs with a history of aggression towards other animals, but are good with people, are placed in single pet homes, with full disclosure of their animosity towards other animals. Dogs who have bitten people are carefully evaluated, both by their foster homes and by professional behaviorists or skilled dog trainers.

Every imaginable source! Families or owners who can no longer care for their dogs for any reason surrender their pets to us. Some are breeder retirees who are ready for lives as pets. Some are puppy mill dogs who have never known life outside a cage. Some are strays or owner surrenders pulled from animal shelters or humane societies. Some dogs are victims of abuse or neglect and are turned over to us by authorities.

Most of FBRN's money is spent ensuring the French Bulldogs who are adopted from FBRN go in good health and good condition. To the best of our knowledge and ability, we will always share any long term concerns and advise our adopters of any possible requirements their rescue might have. Each adoptive family will receive a copy of their dog's available health records.

Good question. It costs quite a bit of money to breed Bulldogs to begin with. A breeder starts out by paying high prices for breeding stock to begin with. Then there is the cost of breeding itself. First there is the stud fee, then shipping costs for the semen, the paying a vet to do artificial insemination, there are blood tests, ultra sounds, x-rays, and the cost of a c-section. Also there is the breeder’s time and work.

Wonderful with proper training and socialization, your American Bulldog will be your childs best friend and your most trustworthy babysitter! It is important to teach your AB puppy that the children are not littermates and they must respect them in their human "alpha" position! A solid regimen of obedience and daily socialization will set your puppy on the right path!

A4. There is no such thing as an English or British Bulldog. Members of the breed are simply called Bulldogs, as in _The_ Bulldog. The French Bulldog, incidentally, derived from minature or dwarf Bulldogs sent to France by the English who did not want them...this in the late 1800's... The genes for mininature still exist in the Bulldog line, and I own one who is a perfectly proportioned 30 pound dog.

Bloat, Canine Hip Dysplasia, Heat, Skin Disorders (allergies). The best way to avoid the majority of these problems is to make preventative vet visits regularly, feed a good diet (Royal Canin Natural, Holistic) with lots of fresh water , and give your pet plenty of exercise. Keep animals out of direct sun for extended periods of time and ensure they do not overdue exercise in extreme heat.
