The resolution of printed text and images is measured in dots per inch, or DPI. The print resolution for a piece can range from 300 DPI to 1200 DPI, and sometimes more, depending on the level of detail required.

Dots per inch: measurement of the scanning resolution of an image or the quality of an output device. DPI expresses the number of dots a printer can print per inch, or that a monitor can display, both horizontally and vertically. For instance a lot of images you see on your monitor are 72 DPI. While they look great on your computer screen, they are not satisfactory for printing your job.

The first thing that you need to understand about digital pictures is that they don't have an inherent DPI rating. That's right, the resolution of digital images is not measured in DPI. Digital images are collections of pixels. The DPI of an image depends entirely on how you decide to display it or print it.

ArtMatic's images are exported without a DPI setting. When exporting from ArtMatic Pro, enter the pixel dimensions of the image you want. For example, if you want the image to be 4 inches square at 300 dpi, export the image with 1200 pixels by 1200 pixels. In your graphics app, open the picture and set the DPI setting without re-sampling the image. In PhotoShop, open the Image Size dialog and set the print resolution to the desired resolution.

This new technology from Ositech Communications Inc. is built into the PC card and allows the modem to communicate through the handset cable of many popular digital (PBX) phone systems. The DPI technology will activate if the modem is connected to a digital (PBX) phone system. Otherwise, standard analog modem mode is activated.

Images on the Internet are displayed at 72 DPI. This number is rather irrelevant though in working with email campaigns. When you are editing images you should focus only on the actual pixel width and height rather than its relationship to inches. The relationship of pixels to inches is of importance to print design, but when designing for the web you should think all in pixels.
