The agency issued new standards to simplify and update the previous standards in use since May 1971 (see Federal Register). OSHA developed the new standards with the input of many industry representatives to better protect the estimated 2.3 million construction workers (about 65 percent of the construction industry workforce) working on scaffolds regularly.

If the temperature is too low you might experience tarry soot or creosote in your chimney. The combustion temperature will be too low if not enough air is supplied compared to the amount of wood. Tarry soot is easily recognized as a brown sticky coat. Supply more secondary air to increase the temperature. A stove pipe thermometer placed on the lower part of the flue pipe will indicate if the air supply is correct. The flue gas temperature must be approx. 250° C.

The 25% reduction rule was published on 6/1/99. The direct final rule for the additional reductions was published in the Federal Register on November 28, 2000. Over the years, emission standards for cars and trucks have been strengthened to address this national air quality problem. The emission standards are in effect from the time the vehicle is produced until the vehicle reaches the end of its useful life. Manufacturers are responsible for selling cars that will pollute no more than the emission standard limits.

The new standards provide strong incentives for suppliers to provide the proper ULSD fuel formulation. Civil penalties of up to $32,500 per violation per day can be assessed for non-compliance with EPA’s ULSD fuel standards, or for misrepresentation of the sulfur level of diesel fuel.

It is important to note that the US EPA has not yet set a standard for perchlorate and will likely not do so for several years. US EPA's 24.5 ppb Drinking Water Equivalent Level (DWEL) value is not a final standard but is an intermediate value used to set a final standard. It does not account for any other source of exposure. Final drinking water standards, including our own, consider other sources of exposure, including those from foods, which have been documented to occur.
