Willamette Dental provides emergency services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If a member experiences an emergency situation (pain, bleeding or swelling), instruct them to call the Appointment Center at (503) 952-2100 in the Portland Metro area or toll free at (800) 461-8994. If necessary, the member will be able to see a dentist within 24 hours. For emergencies during regular office hours, members will pay the usual office-visit charge.

In Oregon, Washington or Idaho - If traveling in our tri-state service area, first call the Appointment Center at (800) 461-8994 to schedule an appointment at the nearest Willamette Dental office. Outside our service area - If the patient cannot get to a Willamette Dental office, or if the patient is traveling outside our service area, he/she may go to any licensed dentist to obtain emergency treatment (relief from pain, bleeding, or swelling).

Emergency room visits are typically covered, though ER visits under most plans have an established copayment amount and are subject to a deductible. See your plan outline or booklet for details. Certain hospitals and ERs have contract agreements with specific insurance carriers. If your emergency is not life-threatening, you would be best advised to consult your insurance provider beforehand to make sure that you go to an in-network facility.

Self-rescue is the responsibility of your group. If a member of your group is injured on the trail or at the hut, you cannot rely on outside help. Your group must be prepared and equipped for a bivouac, rescue, evacuation, equipment repair and any other unexpected mishap. Every group should have complete first aid and repair kits. Toothache: Clean the area of the affected tooth thoroughly. Rinse the mouth vigorously with warm water or use dental floss to dislodge impacted food or debris. DO NOT place aspirin on the gum or on the aching tooth. If face is swollen apply cold compresses. Take the child to a dentist. Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek: Apply ice to bruised areas. If there is bleeding apply firm but gentle pressure with a gauze or cloth.

All bareboats have VHF radios and many areas have marine telephone operators that can contact you through your VHF. Many bareboats have cellular telephones that you can activate if you want to, and in some areas, calls to the base are free. You can of course bring along your own cellphone, but other than in the USA, your phone will probably not roam and you will have to activate it through the local cellphone provider.
