To work with a translator in obtaining translated written materials it is important to inform the translator who the target audience is. In the case of Chinese language, this will determine which version of Chinese characters and expression style to use. The source documents should be well written - with attention paid to grammar, punctuation and spelling - and should be proofrood and/or spell-checked to eliminate typing errors. A translator is Sworn when he/she is certified by the government of his/her residence, enabling him/her to execute Sworn Translations.

Translation and Interpreting are unregulated professions in the U.S. There is no license or certification that is universally accepted. In general, the more credentials you have, the better. For Translators, the most widely recognized credential is Accreditation by the ATA, obtained by passing a rigorous translation exam. For Interpreters, the matter is more complicated, with different agencies having their own exam.

A translator who is A.T.A. certified (American Translators Association) has successfully passed a certification exam in a language pair (i.e., one specific source language and one specific target language), and met educational and ethics requirements. This also applies to the preliminary stage of scanning and rereading the original document, particularly in the case of patents normally submitted in electronic format, since it helps safeguard the original text from any gaps or omissions (e.g. checks of the reference numbers for mechanical patents, tables and formulas for chemical patents and experimental data for technological patents).

A good translator asks questions. You should always be willing to spend time, or to delegate someone to spend time, answering questions that a translator may raise. If a translator does not ask questions, then either he or she already knows everything there is to know about your industry, or doesn't know enough to ask the right questions. A good translator likes to see the whole picture.

In the industry, the term translator tends to refer to any written work carried out, i.e. rendering one document into another language. Whereas an interpreter always refers to someone who translates orally, e.g. at a conference where there are two or more parties speaking different languages. Just to confuse you, the term “translator” can also sometimes refer to someone translating orally. However “Interpreter” never refers to written translation.
