For pre-existing conditions we recommend Shingle Shield Roof Cleaner, which is specifically designed to clean roofs prior to application of the roof protector strips. Other cleaning solutions may not be effective against these organisms, and may harm your roof or plants.

When rain water comes in contact with Shingle Shield Roof Protector, a fungistat and effective drying agent is released, zinc oxide. This agent is meant to inhibit the growth of algae, fungus, or moss – not kill it.

Use a mild solution of chlorine bleach and water or mild detergent gently applied with a sponge or hand-held sprayer and rinse thoroughly. Moss is not fungus. Moss is the green spongy stuff that grows on the south side of trees and on the ground in shaded, damp areas. And, in some areas it also grows on roof membranes and shingles. Mosses reproduce via airborne spores. If a roof is covered with moist organic matter or soil, and if there are minerals and fixed nitrogen present in the dirt on the roof, mosses can grow from the spores that are carried there.

And some people say it rains around here once in a while. So what can you do? Depending on your circumstance, and environmental consciousness here are a few suggestions. In some moist areas, algae can grow on shingles. Although the algae has no proven effect on shingle life, it does stain or discolor the shingle. Commonly called fungus, this algae staining can be unattractive. The algae-containing stains can be dramatically reduced by the use of special copper granules.

Brush off all loose debris and scrape off any large deposits of moss or algae. Apply the solution with a pump sprayer to cool shingles! If the shingles are in sunlight, the solution will evaporate before it can work. Keep the roof surface wet with the solution for at least 30 - 45 minutes. Scrub lightly with a broom or brush and rinse well with water. Try a test section first using just one quart of solution. If it is still stained, boost the concentration to 8 ounces per gallon of water.

You must first spray the darker streaks that appear on the roof, then spray the remaining roof surface, going over these darker streaks a second time. Some severe stains may require a slightly higher ratio of water to concentrate. If in doubt, experiment with a small area of the roof, first starting with the recommended ratio of 9 parts water to one part concentrate. Work your way up to a 6:1 ratio, which should only be used on the most severe problem areas.

For a new roof, install a zinc or galvanized type metal near the ridge of the roof. As the metal ions are oxidized and erode off of the metal strip, they wash down the roof inhibiting cellular algae growth. A dilute solution of chlorine bleach, trisodium phosphate and water can be applied - one part chlorine bleach to three parts water with a quarter cup of trisodium phosphate.
