CCA is the maximum amperes that can be continuously removed from a battery for 30 seconds at 0?F before its voltage drops to unusable levels. A 550 CCA battery can supply 550 amperes for 30 seconds at 0?F. This rating is only useful in the selection of engine starting batteries. NOTE: Do not confuse Cold Cranking Amperage (CCA) with Marine Cranking Amperage (MCA) or Cranking Amperage (CA). MCA and CA is a higher battery rating measured at warmer temperatures.

It is recommended to push on the brakes in the toad vehicle 3-4 times before putting the Apollo in. If you do not do this and the brakes activate with the Apollo the vaccum in the reservoir will also apply and can lock up the brakes. Place the Apollo on the floor of the toad vehicle. Attach the clevis to the brake pedal. Move the Apollo forward until the cylinder rod is fully retracted. Then adjust the driver seat so that it touches the back of the Apollo.

CCA (cold cranking amps) is a measurement of the starting power of a battery at 0?F under a load (ampere draw) for 30 seconds with the end voltage maintained at 1.20 volts per cell. Several variations of CCA ratings may be applied to a battery including; MCA (marine cranking amps) or CA (Cranking amps), which are generally 20% higher than CCA (cold cranking amps) and reflect higher temperature testing.

Unlike CCA and MCA the pulse cranking ampere (PCA) rating does not have an "official" definition; however, we believe that for true engine start purposes, a 30 second discharge is unrealistic. Our terminals are tested and listed to the requirements of UL486A. The basis of this testing requirement is that the connector shall run cooler than the listed conductor. Since the connector is running cooler than the conductor, the limiting factor is the temperature restraints on the conductor.

Cold temperatures dramatically reduce the effectiveness of chemical reactions within the battery, while increasing the battery's internal resistance. Both of these cause a reduction in cranking power as temperatures drop. Batteries left in a discharged state are also susceptible to freezing, which damages internal components and containers. Cars require an increased amount of cranking power in cold weather, due to the fact that motor oil is thicker and makes engines harder to crank.

The most common battery rating is the AMP-HOUR RATING. This is a unit of measurement for battery capacity, obtained by multiplying a current flow in amperes by the time in hours of discharge. The value given on the rating plate of the battery is the Cold Starting Performance or Cold Cranking Current. The following definition comes from Varta Batteries' very useful website - "Cold cranking is the discharge current given by the manufacturer. It is emitted by a battery at a temperature of minus 18C with a minimum voltage of Ui = 7.5 volt for a period of 10 seconds, according to EN specifications." (Batteries are bad!)", but there was no alternative, we didn't want you to have to set the clock on every power-on cycle or have it blinking 1200 or take the chance of running down the aircraft battery.
