The most common cause of flickering light is major appliances on the same circuit as the lighting. Lamps flicker when the appliances start up. This is caused by the appliance drawing a lot of power momentarily and basically robbing power from the rest of the circuit. Lighting will also flicker if there are any loose wiring connections, defective lamp sockets or defective bulbs.
Magic Touch Mechanical
Light flicker associated with the starting of appliances usually does not pose any safety problems and does not damage appliances. Proper wire connections and grounding are necessary to reduce flicker. Contractors and homeowners should check with their local utility regarding the appropriate wire size and transformer servicing the home.
Electricians PLUS Frequently Asked Questions

The environment is too cold; most ballasts are not designed for temperatures less than 50 degrees. Drafts and moving cold air may cause flickering too. Special low-temperature ballasts are available; ask our Customer Service staff for details. The lamp is not properly installed in the socket. Try removing it and reinstalling it to ensure it is firmly in place.
ETV Personal Video Recorder - FAQ
Although you have Xv support, it seems your destination colorkey (=chromakey) does not work. The output from xvinfo should have an attribute called XV_COLORKEY. If it doesn't, you will have to use the software scaling version of the frontend (--noaccel option). Do contact me, I'd like to find out how to detect/workaround these cases. If this happens once a while, no problem. If it happens while your CPU usage is 100%, use a lower quality profile.

Shadow flicker occurs in very particular conditions when the sun is low in the sky and shines on a building from behind a turbine’s rotor. This can cause a shadow from the turbines blades to be cast on the building appearing to flick on and off as they rotate. When this flicker is viewed through a narrow opening it is known as shadow flicker. The potential for shadow flicker can be assessed for individual buildings around proposed sites.
D programs using shutter glasses are best viewed in a dark room or at night. Any bright light source other than your TV set can cause a noticeable flicker effect. Be sure the Picture/Contrast levels on your TV monitor are set at the middle range setting to reduce flicker in your glasses. You may want to reduce the COLOR intensity on the TV monitor as well.

The Robert McCammon FAQ
Lights Out! was a Robert R. McCammon newsletter I wrote and published. Six issues were distributed from July 1989 to February 1991. Unfortunately, all the printed copies of the newsletter were sold, and I no longer have any available. You can sometimes find people selling them on eBay, though they often ask too much money for them. The first 5 issues of Lights Out! are available for download as PDF files.
This is the result of a faulty ballast. The faulty ballast usually has a small break in the internal wiring which makes contact when the light is turned on. As the ballast gets hot, the break expands causing the light to go out. After the ballast cools, the lamp relights, and the process starts over. The ballast must be replaced to correct the problem.
GE Consumer & Industrial Lighting: Ask Us: FAQs - Compact Fl...
The first compact fluorescent bulbs flickered when they were turned on because it took a few seconds for the ballast to produce enough electricity to excite the gas inside the bulb. Thanks to the refined technology in our new GE compact fluorescent bulbs, there is now no significant flicker (less than 1 second). However, these bulbs do require a short warm-up period before they reach full brightness, which is why they may appear dim when first turned on.

By default, the Content Editor highlights your text assuming that it is screenplay dialogue, changing the text colour and properties accordingly. This can cause a small amount of flickering that might be noticeable on some machines. You can switch Content Highlighting off by clicking on the toolbar button that looks like a switch (or going to View/Preferences.../Content Highlighting) and unchecking 'Highlighting for new projects' and 'Highlighting for the current project'.
