Tailor your cover letter and resume specifically to the job you are applying for, highlighting your: a) interest in the role/area; b) skills/transferable skills you possess that relate to the job you are applying to; c) relevant work experience; and d) extracurricular including volunteer work, association memberships.

Most employers and recruiters will contact you directly for a formatted "presentation" copy of your documents once they have retrieved your information from the databanks. It's a mistake to simply copy information from your resume into your cover letter. Your resume's telegraphic writing style (where personal pronouns and articles like "the" and "a" may be omitted) is not appropriate for a cover letter. In fact, a cover letter gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your writing skills.
