The station circle represents the cloud cover; open circle means clear; and a completely covered circle means 100% cloud cover (or fog). The line extending outward from the station circle is called a wind barb and represents the wind flow; where the wind is blowing from the direction of the barb (north is towards the top of the map and east is towards the viewer's right). The line(s) extending from the end of the barb are called feathers and represent the windspeed.

In Digital Atmosphere 2000, when I display a station plot, I only get the oktas, wind barb, pressure and ceiling height. No temperature, no dewpoint, no visibility. Each symbol is composed of the first two letters of the genus+first two letters of the species+first letter of the terminal infraspecific name+tiebreaking number (if needed). Genus and family symbols are the first five (genus) or six (family) letters of the name, plus tiebreaking number (if needed). Symbols were first used in the Soil Conservation Service’s National List of Scientific Plant Names (NLSPN), and have been perpetuated in the PLANTS system.

Make sure the symbol line color is different from the symbol fill color. Open the symbol map properties, click the button in the symbol group, and then check the line and fill colors in the symbol properties dialog box.

The data used for most maps is available on the Atlas CD. However, it is in "dbf" format. If you have access to data base management software that recognizes the "dbf" format, you can use it to access the map data. The dbf data files are located in the folder structure: "climatls\aeprojs\dbfshape\project\". That folder structure is off the root directory of your CD.

Lithologic symbols are contained in symbol libraries. There can be an unlimited number of symbol libraries, and each library contains 18 symbols.
