Only Black bears (ursus americanus) live in the UP. Many people have difficulty distinguishing bear species. The Grizzly bear is part of the Brown bear family (ursus arctos), and is now currently indigenous to only a few remote areas of the continental US, Canada and Alaska. The Grizzly is a much different animal than the Black bear and should not be confused with it.

You may climb more slowly on a recumbent, but if you keep pedaling, the scenery keeps moving. For steeper hills, most quality recumbents come with a low "granny gear" so you can spin your way to the top. Brown bears on Kodiak Island are classified as a distinct subspecies, U. a. middendorffi, from those on the mainland (U. a. horribilis) because they are genetically and physically isolated.
