The clinical psychology program has established no firm “cut-off” scores—other than the minimum grade point average required by the university—for admission to the program. All applications are evaluated individually on a case-by-case basis. However, our program receives applications from more individuals than we have the resources to admit. Space and financial considerations therefore require us to deny admission to a number of otherwise qualified candidates.

In general, we look for at least a B undergraduate average, but the overall record is of primary importance. Individual programs may be interested in how an applicant did in specific courses, whether the undergraduate background course work was adequate for the program, and whether the applicant showed a pattern of improvement during undergraduate study. There is no specific cut-off for the GRE.

We do not have absolute minimum required scores for either the GRE or the TOEFL. For applicants whose native language is not English, the great majority of those who are admitted have TOEFL scores above 600. Applicants with TOEFL scores of less than 600 but whose other credentials are very strong are occasionally admitted, however. Additional comments about the GRE will be found below.

Yes. Applicants with GRE verbal scores below the 60th percentile (30th percentile for non-native speakers of English), GRE quantitative scores below the 70th percentile, or TOEFL scores below 600 (or below 250 if computer based exam) will not be considered for admission.

The required minimum academic grade point average (for the final 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of undergraduate work) is 3.0 on a four-point scale; normally, those admitted have a grade point average well above this minimum. GRE scores must be submitted, but there is no required minimum. Admission to our program is highly competitive. The average GPA and GRE scores of those admitted will vary slightly from year to year.

What we are most interested in is the applicant's research potential. These scores are just one of many criteria we consider. There are no minimum scores. We much prefer students who have taken challenging advanced courses to those with top scores on rudimentary courses. There are many ways for applicants to demonstrate their research potential.

While Rutgers University does have a preferred minimum score for the GRE's, it is possible that a student will excel in one area and perform slightly below the desired score in another, or that the applicant's total GRE score is below the desired score, but that other aspects of the student's application ( undergraduate and graduate GPA's, research or teaching experience, publications etc) are very strong. Such applicants may be acceptable to the Program.

SIMS has not set any minimum scores, but normally successful applicants score in the high percentiles (80's and 90's) on the General Test.

The GRE (recommended) is an important exam score to submit with applications (include raw scores, percentiles, and exam dates). If these scores are very high, often they will be enough for us to act on an application. We generally look for very strong GRE quantitative and analytical scores, a GRE verbal score at or above the 35th percentile. We admit applicants with a wide variety of GRE scores; there is no specific minimum required. All applications are viewed as complete packages, and strong letters of recommendation, excellent GPA from transcripts, and a focused and well-written statement of purpose can help to offset middle range GRE scores.

We really cannot say based only on your GPA, GRE and (for international students) TOEFL scores what your chances of admission and a funding offer are. We look at the entire application, including your courses (and grades in them), your personal statement, and your letters of recommendation.

Yes, if you are not invited to interview with the MSTP, your application will be returned to the main Admissions Office to be included with the medical school general applicant pool for screening and interview consideration. From that point on, the medical school Admissions Office will handle your application.

Because the GRE score is one of several criteria considered for admission and not used as single criteria, there is no official minimum score or combination of scores required.
