A subwoofer is a specialized speaker responsible for the most difficult duty in home theater. It produces the very deep, room shaking notes that add a magical effect and balance the sound. This requires providing lots of power to fill a room with sound, and large mechanical motions of the subwoofer. When you hear about Dolby 5.1, the ".1" refers to the subwoofer's special role in a surround sound system consisting of five speakers and (at least) one subwoofer.

In most cases, if you hear audio program along with the “hum” through the subwoofer, there is probably a “ground loop” problem in your system. Make certain that both the receiver and subwoofer are plugged into outlets that share a common circuit breaker. Many subwoofers contain their own amplifier and crossover. For these, take the preamp output and feed it into the subwoofer amp input and also into the main amplifier. For other subwoofers, just run them in parallel with your main speakers, or combine them into your system with your own bass amplifier and crossover. Powered bottoms are available as options on some Jupiter and DaVinci kilns. They are not available on the Easy-Fire kilns. We recommend this option for a few different reasons. On very large kilns such as the T3400 Series, where you could get a cold spot in the floor, a powered bottom will improve uniformity. Currently, most HSU Research subwoofers are shielded, although extreme proximity of a subwoofer to a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) television may produce streaks of colors. More and more TVs are not sensitive to magnetic fields, so this gets to be less and less of an issue. If you have a plasma, LCD, or DLP based TV, you do not have to worry about magnetic shielding. To hook up a HSU Research subwoofer (any VTF or STF-3) to a pre-amp, a stereo pair of RCA cables are to be connected from the pre-amp line-level outputs to the subwoofer line-level inputs. This stereo pair output can be sourced from secondary line-level output jacks or by splitting the line-level output jacks by an (1 RCA male to 2 RCA female) adapter. On older machines (without onboard SCSI controllers), it is never a good idea to do this. You risk blowing a fuse on the CPU board, or part of the SCSI hardware. On newer machines (sparcstations and later), many people have done this regularly without problems. Halt the machine (sync;L1-A), remove or add the device, then continue. You typically have two options when connecting a powered sub woofer. Input (1) on the rear of the sub woofer would be used when connecting the sub woofer to the receiver using speaker wires. You would then connect the main speakers to the opposite end, or output or the sub woofer to the main speakers. You have a ground loop problem. Try using a cheater plug that removes the third prong, also called the 'ground'. Do NOT ground the grounding tab on the cheater plug! That would defeat the purpose of the cheater plug for this application. You have an amplifier problem. If the ground cheater plug does not help, disconnect all interconnects from the subwoofer amplifier. If still hums, call or email technical support. You have a problem with other equipment.
