Because the exact makeup of concrete is usually unknown, it is virtually impossible to provide a %MC calibration. Delmhorst moisture meters feature a 0-100 reference scale that provides "dry to wet" indications of the presence of moisture. Factors that affect concrete moisture readings include it's mix ratio and type, voids, and depth that the pin penetrates.

We own and use an Electrophysics GRP 33 Marine Moisture meter. We probably will not use it on the bottom of the boat during a standard pre-purchase survey (unless it is a dry-stored boat). They are useful to assess moisture intrusion into cored decks, or in wood cored transoms or stringers. Most people, including many surveyors, do not understand the workings of moisture meters or the constraints necessary to achieve a reliable reading on a boats hull.

The moisture content of our logs is between 8% and 16%. Kiln dried lumber is graded to 19% maximum moisture content.

Our manufacturer's bamboo flooring is steamed or kiln dried to a proper level, the flooring's interior moisture content is maintained at 7% to 10% during the manufacturing.

Using the principle of electrical resistance, pin-type meters use the board as an element in a circuit by driving two pins or electrodes into it. This method works because moisture conducts electricity well and dry wood is an effective insulator. Most pinless meters use the capacitance method, which uses the relationship between the moisture content and the dielectric properties of the wood.

A - Concrete must have water to gain strength and hydrating membranes are an essential part of concrete construction. Any reputable installer will insist you consider getting a moisture test done if your slab is less than six months old. If the moisture content in the slab is higher than 3% the installer may suggest the use of a moisture barrier to protect the timber flooring while the slab continues to dry.

A vast amount of water can be trapped by concrete floors below ground. Since the soil adjacent to the concrete can bring humidity to the floor, it is important to avoid direct contact between the laminate flooring and the concrete floor.

Ideally, the relative humidity should be around 50% inside the home. This is measured with a hygrometer. Of course, in arid areas, this will not be possible with out a major humidification process. In most areas, a humidifier on a forced air HVAC system will elevate the humidity during dry times, such as winter.

You will need to request an RMA number through your local distributor. Once you receive your RMA number you can send your meter in for re-calibration.

It can read the moisture as a relative reading; in other words it will give an indication of a problem area, but will not give a definite moisture content. There are constituents in concrete that can cause the moisture readings to be in error, but as long as the concrete is homogeneous, the error will be constant. Example: If the slab reads approximately 12% moisture in all areas but one area is approx. 20%, it can be assumed that this is a problem area.
