Start with the most popular sizes, soprano or concert. This way you will have a point of reference if later you decide to try something else.

By measuring. Using Martin ukes as the standard, soprano ukes are approximately 21 inches long, concert ukes are 23" long, tenor ukes are 26" long and baritone ukes ukes are 30-31" long.

For coastal cruising, the simple answer is whatever boat strikes your fancy and satisfies your budget. People who strain their budget to buy expensive boats don't tend to use them that much, because they're busy earning money to keep both their boat and other aspects of their lifestyle afloat. I had a graphic example of this when I visited the ritzy Marina del Rey section of our city (where I work) and the far scummier Long Beach marina.

Our standard sizes are in 18-inch (45cm) increments. They are 18, 36, 54, & 72 inches (45, 90, 137, 182 cm). The 72" size works well on full size trucks. The 54" unit was designed for compact trucks like the Dodge Dakota, Chevy Blazer, Toyota's, and Nissan's. The 36" Power Bar fits most aircraft tugs. We can build them any size up to 24 feet (7.2 m). This depends on the kind of work you want to do. If working in very thick metal, get a pump that is capable of putting a lot of horsepower to the nozzle. Although a smaller pump can machine thick metal, a larger pump will be faster, and therefore more practical. If cutting mostly thin metal, or doing water-only cutting, get a smaller pump. Smaller pumps are often cheaper, cost less to run, are easier to maintain, more reliable, and are quieter. Bigger pumps, however, allow faster cutting.

The young generation should be sized large enough so that short-lived objects have a chance to die before the next young generation collection. This is a tradeoff since a larger young generation will allow more time for objects to die but may also take longer to collect. Experiment with the size of the young generation to optimize the young generation collection time or the application throughput.

There are two main ways of sizing ukuleles. The first is to simply measure how long your uke is from top to bottom. The second and more accurate way, is to measure the string scale-length. This is done by finding the distance from where the strings leave the nut, to the center of the 12th fret, and doubling that measurement.

From the late 1920's to mid 1930's, the ukulele reached it's zenith as the height of fashion. In that era, the little uke seemed to be ubiquitous and was seen in the hands of everyone from college students to movie stars. This wave of popularity lasted into the mid 1930's. The second wave of popularity started in the late 1940's after WW2 ended, and lasted into the 1950's. Some soldiers were even supplied with ukes by the military during the war and wanted to continue playing as civilians.

To a certain extent, determining pot size will take into consideration your growing conditions, potting medium and watering habits, but as a general rule you do not want to over pot Paphs, as this leads frequently to root loss over time. Rather pot them so that the roots just comfortably fit into the pot, like a hat on your head: snug enough to stay on but not uncomfortably tight. The other consideration in a pot for Paphs is that it have sufficient drainage.

The size you buy depends on your personal preference. Pick up your favorite stick and measure it from tip to tip along with the diameter. From the measurements you have taken choose your Durattan? sticks accordingly. Please remember that Durattan? is slightly heavier than an average rattan stick. Yet, it is not as heavy as hard wood. Not really. There are many differences, but the biggest is probably the way it's tuned. The ukulele uses a type of tuning called "reentrant" tuning. In reentrant tuning, instead of the strings being tuned across the neck from high to low, one of the strings jumps up in pitch while its neighbors drop progressively. Reentrant tuning is found on other stringed instruments including the lute, Venezuelan cuatro and 5-string banjo.

In general, older instruments have increased in value, especially in the last few years as more uke enthusiasts come into the fold. We've seen values go up tenfold for certain ukuleles. Instruments in excellent, original condition with no cracks or damage have the most value to collectors. Some of the most sought after instruments include the older Hawaiian ukes. The top mainland brands are equally in demand.
