Electrostatic plotters apply color using colored toner particles suspended in a liquid carrier. Charges are applied to the paper and passed through liduid toner, where charged toner particle adhere to the paper. As the paper is removed from the bath, the toner emerges dry.

A high voltage power supply is used to generate an intense ionization field at the inlet side of the cleaning device. Airborne pollutants that pass through the ionization field become positively charged. Certain materials carry more static charge than others. Most electrostatic air filters, like the AIR MEDIC, have two filter layers of polypropylene filter material. This polypropylene material carries an inherit static charge which is normally around 1,500 static volts. It does have some electrostatic effect, but we do not claim so because electrostaticity does not work under all circumstances. Electrostaticity takes air flow to create a charge, and in areas with high humidity it is hard to create a charge. Because the A/C unit is not on all the time, there will be no charge in the filter and the dust may come loose. Electrostatic media is media fibers that can be statically charged. This special type of media fiber is frequently made of plastic fibers, these strands produce a static charge as friction is generated by air passing over and through the fibers. A good filter that removes particles from the air is not all that is needed for an air cleaner to be effective. The filter must also allow a large quantity of air to pass through it. Inkjet printers simply shoot ink onto it's paper, where the electrostatic process is more complex (see above). Generally electrostatic plotters have much faster print times and are more flexible in transfer media.
