When you want to mount the fence atop your concrete pool apron, for example, you can use floor flanges on the posts. If calculated on a square foot basis, our countertops can cost less, the same or more than granite, which is becoming more affordable and readily available to the masses. Just as paintings are not sold by the square foot, we tend to price our countertops per project, not by size, as not all square feet are created equal. More creative and technically complex projects require more complex forms and a more sophisticated mold making process.

When wood is exposed to the elements, its life span depends on the wood species, the degree of decay hazard, the maintenance activities, and the nature of the preservative treatment, if any. Shingles made of naturally durable western red cedar typically last 15-25 years. A well-designed and ventilated cedar deck will have a similar life, as will fence boards.

Most decks are constructed of pressure treated lumber. A penetrating deck stain tends to work best on the horizontal surfaces (flooring) of decks due to constant foot traffic. The vertical surfaces of decks and fences may be stained or painted according to personal preference. Check the porosity of the wood before attempting to stain by sprinkling water on the surface. If the water beads, then the stain will not penetrate the wood.

We manufacture the majority of our products with 6 Lb polyurethane foam typical to that which is used by other major polyurethane suppliers of architectural mouldings. If you were to hammer a nail through one of our mouldings, it would be similar to hammering through a piece of soft pine. The mouldings do come with a white primer coating on them that will provide ultraviolet light protection during installation. Many exterior paints now contain some level of protection from the sun's rays.

We're often asked if we see much of the engineered stones and we can honestly say we do--when we're replacing it with natural stone! Do our customers ask us to install it? Very rarely, and when they do we have to send them to the big box stores for a quote because we don't work in it. Today's engineered stones are a blend of crushed quartz (stone) held together by epoxy (plastic). They are a modern-day substitute for corian, popular in the 1970's.

Concrete is an inexpensive and durable option, but it will crack. Pavers are more expensive but last longer, provide more of an interest from a design perspective, and are easily repaired if earth shifting occurs. Stone creates a beautiful and natural look but is the most expensive option. Many stone applications can be sandset, which is flexible to ground shifting. Occasionally stone requires a mortar setting, which is less tolerant of ground shifting.
