First, the TOEFL provides an overall assessment of English proficiency, not placement into a particular ESL program. The NVCC ESL placement test compares your skills to those of other students in the NVCC program, and thus shows where in this program you should begin. Second, students must schedule their own TOEFL tests months in advance, and pay a fee. The NVCC placement test does not require an appointment, and there is no fee.

Any student planning to attend the University of Washington and continue coursework of a foreign language used for admission to the UW must take the Foreign Language Placement Test (FLPT). For example, if you took at least 2 years of Spanish in high school, used Spanish for UW admission, and plan to continue taking Spanish at the UW, you must take the Spanish placement test before registering for a Spanish course.

Yes. At no extra cost, candidates can listen through a headset to the test being read out. This includes 20 languages other than English. The Accuplacer Test evaluates English and math competency. This is a placement test with three sections (reading, sentence structure, and math). English 101A or equivalent (ENG 1A) is required for admission. The English reading comprehension requirement is met through "clearing" English 163. Adult ESL, or English as a second language, is the term used to describe English language instruction for adults who are nonnative speakers of English. You can contact the faculty member for that language and ask for an oral interview to confirm or change your placement. Teachers will also be checking for appropriate placement during the first week of classes. However, it is always better for your schedule planning if you can verify your appropriate placement before enrolling in a class.

All A.B. candidates who have not fulfilled the language requirement on the basis of advanced placement must study a language at Princeton. If you wish to continue studying a language that you have previously studied in high school, you will need to take a placement test. Placement tests in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, or Spanish should be taken online between July 15 and August 15.

Students are encouraged, but not required, to take the Foreign Language Placement Test. If you are considering study of a foreign language, you should take the test to ensure the proper placement level in language classes. Students with some high school background in a foreign language may be eligible to receive free retroactive credits for one or more college-level courses. The test was devised for first-language English speakers and the Cambridge Checkpoint scales calibrated against the performance of first-language English speakers (entry forms distinguish FLE and SLE speakers). The test can be accessed by second-language English speakers but they will be awarded scores rated against FLE scales.
