How should I notarize a document that contains no notarial certificate?

Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell
You should not. A notarization is incomplete without notarial wording. It is not the notary’s role or obligation to decide what type of notarial act is needed for a given document. This is a legal decision. The signer should be asked to find out what kind of certificate is appropriate. This information may be acquired through an attorney or from the issuing or receiving agencies of the document.

Is it proper for the notarial certificate to be an attachment to the document?

Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell
Yes. However, the notarial certificate should be identified in some way as belonging to that document. You might, for example, write in the margin, “This certificate is attached to a _________________ (name document) dated __________________, and signed by _____________________.” See similar questions...

Q May a notary public determine which type of notarial certificate should be attached to a document?

State of Texas- notary public
A No. As stated above, a notary public who is not an attorney should only complete a notarial certificate which is already on the document or type or attach a certificate of the signer's choosing. If a notary public is presented with a document without a certificate and the notary makes the decision of which certificate to attach, that notary public would be "practicing law" without a license, which is against the law. What document in /waffle/docs contains what ?

news.answers/waffle-faq
waffle/docs/index.doc has the table of contents of each of the other documents. Use a text editor or something similar to look for keywords in index.doc, then it will point you to which file to look in. If you have a version of the UNIX utility 'grep', it's best to do something like 'grep keyword /waffle/docs/*', to find even obscure references to things. See similar questions...
