Why do I need an expansion tank in my chilled water system?

TACO - HVAC - Air Elimination & Control
A chilled water system is filled with water at a temperature between 50 and 60?F. When the chiller is turned on, the temperature of the water drops to 45?F. When the water contracts, the system pressure drops, and the fill valve allows more water to enter the system to maintain the system pressure. If the chiller shuts down and the water in the system warms up to room temperature, the rise in temperature from 45? to ambient will cause the water in the system to expand.

Why would an expansion tank need to be drained? How is this done?

HVAC Service and HVAC Equipment Sales & Installation - Balti...
If all the setting are correct on a boiler the expansion tank should never need to be drained. The tank constantly has water in it so ever if you drain it water will flow back into the tank. This will depend on where you are camping. When camping at a campground which has water at each site, filling the tank is not necessary. Just connect your hose (you did get a white hose designed for drinking water, didn't you?) to the city water connection on the side of your pop-up. When camping at a campground which has water available, but not at each site, stop at a water source as you enter the campground and fill up the tank using your hose BEFORE you go to the site to set up the pop-up. The general rule of thumb in aquarium keeping is to have no more that one inch of fish per gallon of water. This formula also assumes you will change 25% of the tank volume each week. See What is a water change? Why is it important? for more details. Realistically, however, you will need to consider the following factors when choosing what size tank to purchase: See similar questions...
